What we already know from Apple
The Apple AirPods 2 come with a price tag of $159 for wired charging case and $199 for the wireless charging case. The H1 chip replaces W1 chip. Additionally, the battery life in terms of talk-time has improved by 1 hour on AirPods 2 (It used to be 2 hours on AirPods 1s Gen, which improved to 3 hours on AirPods 2). Siri is voice-activated on the 2nd Gen. And switching the AirPods 2 from one device to another is twice as fast on AirPods 1st Gen. The AirPods still has a single universal fit and are not gym friendly as they are not sweat or water-resistant. Moreover, the LED indicator has moved outside for the ease of not opening the lid to check the charging status.
First Glance of the AirPods 2
As we have repeatedly mentioned, there is not much physical difference between the two generations of AirPods. They are plastic built, still feel durable and chic. Are tiny enough to fit in the pocket. Some visible changes include LED light shifting from inside the case to outside. The case has a new hinge design and AirPods 2 come with an option of a wired or a wireless charging case. You can also buy the wireless case for your AirPods 1st Gen. The case still comes with a lightning cable, when it should be a type-c. Yet the Apple users would not complain, as they already have a whole lot of lightning cables lying around. The other fact that can’t miss the eye is the colour white; the earbuds are still, all white. There are no colour options as of now, which might be fancy and boring at the same time.
After a simple one-tap setup, AirPods are automatically on and always connected. Using them is just as easy. They sense when they’re in your ears and pause when you take them out. And the AirPods experience is just as amazing whether you’re using them with your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac.
Airpods with Siri-A Helping Hand.
Need a hand? Simply say “Hey Siri” for assistance without having to reach for your iPhone. And with Announce Messages, Siri can automatically speak your incoming messages as they arrive. You can choose which contacts you hear them from, and Siri won’t interrupt you if you’re on a call or sharing a song.
Performance at peak with H1 Chip
Powered by the Apple H1 headphone chip, AirPods deliver a faster and more stable wireless connection to your devices — up to 2x faster when switching between active devices, and a 1.5x faster connection time for phone calls. The H1 chip also drives voice-enabled Siri access and delivers up to 30 percent lower gaming latency. So whether you’re playing games, listening to music, or enjoying podcasts, you’ll experience higher-quality sound.
Knows when you’re listening. Optical sensors and motion accelerometers work together to automatically control the audio experience, engaging the microphones for phone calls and Siri access, and enabling AirPods to play sound as soon as they’re in your ears. You also have the freedom to wear one or both AirPods, and you can play or skip forward with a double-tap when listening to music.
Speech Detecting accelerometer
A speech-detecting accelerometer recognizes when you’re speaking and works with a pair of beamforming microphones to filter out external noise and focus on the sound of your voice.
Wireless Charging Case
With the Wireless Charging Case, charging is as simple as placing the AirPods case on a Qi-certified charging mat. That’s it. The LED indicator on the front of the case lets you know that your AirPods are charging. And when you’re away from a charging mat, you can use the Lightning port to charge. In this review of AirPods 2, we found out that Wireless charging is not as fast the Cable but it is much more convenient and satisfying.
24‑hour battery life.
AirPods deliver an industry-leading5 hours of listening time — and now up to 3 hours of talk time — all on one charge. And they’re made to keep up with you, thanks to a charging case that holds multiple charges for more than 24 hours of listening time. Need a quick charge? Just put AirPods back in the case for 15 minutes to get up to 3 hours of listening time or up to 2 hours of talk time. To check the battery, hold the AirPods next to your iPhone or ask Siri “How’s the battery on my AirPods?
- More than24 hr. of battery life with charging case
- Up to5 hr. of listening time on one charge
- Only 15 minute of charging provides up to 3 hours of listening time
AirPods connect immediately to your iPhone or Apple Watch, and sound switches seamlessly between the devices. Want to listen to your Mac or iPad? Just choose AirPods on those devices. A very Easy setup.
With Audio Sharing, you can easily share a song, podcast, or other audio stream between two sets of AirPods — each with independent volume control. If your AirPods are in their case, just bring them close to the iPhone or iPad you want to share with and connect in a tap. And if your AirPods are in your ears, bring your iPhone close to the device instead.
Sound and Performance Test
The AirPods 2 sound splendid in a quiet environment; the bass is loud, the mids and highs were clear. However, if you were to use the AirPods for calling, you need a quiet place, or else you will have a terrible time guessing what the other person is trying to convey. The universal fit may not be an obstacle at home, but the AirPods are useless in traffic and crowded areas. Despite the change form W1 to H1 chip, there is not much change in the sound quality.
The magic of the chip comes in play when you try to pair or connect the AirPods. The whole drill of AirPods connecting with the Apple products is pretty effortless and reliable. There is no breakage during calls, and the 100 ft range is commendable. Along with that, the case is durable and holds on the charging well. The Apple users have no complaints with the AirPods whatsoever.
The battery is consistent when you listen to music mostly. However, when you take multiple calls during the session, the battery seems to drop steeply. However, if you are not an avid user, the charging case will last you for two-three days at-least. The AirPods makes a sound when they are on 10% so that you know its time to recharge the buds. The wireless charging is not fast, yet it could be convenient if you already use a wireless charging pad. Since wireless charging is the way of the future; it makes sense to buy the AirPods which come along the wireless charging case for new buyers.
What do we miss in AirPods 2?
We can have a whole bunch of list to rant about the missing features and expectations we felt after this AirPods 2 review. For starters;
- AirPods look the same as 1st Gen.
- We still are stuck with the white colour.
- The Sound quality saw no improvement, even with a new H1 chip.
- AirPods have nothing new to offer for non- iOS users. For them, AirPods are just overpriced Bluetooth headphones.
- AirPods are still on lightning cables when the whole world has shifted to type-c.
Our Verdict on AirPods 2
Through this AirPods 2 review, we found that AirPods are great for iPhone users. They hold charging well, connects quickly and “Hey Siri” is at your command. Plus the sound quality is also good. However, if you are an Android user, you have many other contenders because AirPods lose many of its capabilities and become a regular BlueTooth headphone with a non-Apple device.
For an AirPods 1 user, there are only a few changes between the two generations, so it makes no sense investing $199 on a new AirPods 2 which looks, feels and does pretty much the same.
