Nubia Red Magic 6R – An Affordable Gaming Phone for Avid Gamers!

Share

The Nubia Red magic 6R is a gaming phone for folks who enjoy mobile gaming but also desire a level of everyday practicality and subtlety. It’s also for individuals who wish to get a competitive advantage without spending a lot of money. The Nubia Red magic 6R smartphone may not be as feature-rich, powerful, or gamer-friendly as the current selection for the best value-for-money gaming phone on the market, the Nubia Red magic 6S Pro. It is, however, a bit gentler on the eyes, pocketbook, and pocket.

There’s a legitimate case to be made that the Nubia Red magic 6R falls between two stools, not quite gratifying as a portable gamer or a day-to-day all-rounder. However, it’s just as simple to argue that it meets an unmet need.

The Red Magic 6R is a new, more cheap alternative to the 6 and 6 Pro that doesn’t skimp on features. But can it match with the plethora of competent mid-range phones on the market today?

Price & Availability

The Nubia Red Magic 6R smartphone is reasonably priced when you consider all you receive. The entry-level model under consideration here comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for £429/US$499. A step up to 12GB/256GB will cost you £519/US$599.

The new Nubia Red magic 6S Pro has put a lot of pressure on a number of phones in this area, including the slightly older Nubia Red magic 6R. Perhaps this is why the top-end 6R has been reduced to £479 on the Nubia website.

Even with the more costly setup, it is less expensive than the Red Magic 6. It’s also one of the most reasonably priced specialized gaming phones available. When compared to the £799 Asus ROG Phone 5, the Red Magic 6R holds its own.

If you can live with the tradeoffs, the 6R represents outstanding value for money.

Design

Nubia is clearly attempting to appeal to more popular design sensibilities with the Red Magic 6R smartphone. The conventional gamer aesthetic has been drastically reduced in favor of clean lines and a minimalist appearance and feel.

The color selections reflect this, with the ‘Cosmos’ model I tried joined by a single ‘Mercury’ option. It’s the first Red Magic phone that ordinary folks are interested in rather than turned off by. However, die-hard mobile gamers may miss the crazy designs that have become synonymous with the Red Magic line.

On the rear of the phone, though, there are some subtle indications of the 6R’s gaming capabilities. It has a two-tone design and some interesting patterning, both of which are likely to appeal to gamers.

The rear camera module, of course, cannot be overlooked. It has four lenses and a big flash, although it protrudes slightly from the phone’s rear. When you use it on a table, it rocks somewhat, but this isn’t a major deal for most people. More on the cameras to come.

Display – Body Ratio

When you flip the Nubia Red Magic 6R smartphone over, you’ll see a huge touchscreen display with narrow bezels. This results in an amazing 87.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, owing mostly to a hole-punch selfie camera, which is not included on the normal Red Magic 6 and 6 Pro.

Gorilla Glass Protection

The front and back are composed of Gorilla Glass 3, while the frame is built of aluminum. Nubia has kept the device’s sides incredibly minimal, with only a power button, volume rocker, and two shoulder triggers. That implies there is no separate slider for the ‘Game Space’ option, despite the fact that it is present.

Unfortunately, Nubia has degraded the Red Magic 6R’s cooling system. Because the device lacks the built-in fan seen on the 6 and 6 Pro, it can rapidly become hot to the touch during heavy gameplay. It’s not a major issue, but it’s evident when compared to newer Red Magic phones.

Ports

The bottom of the phone houses the single SIM slot (no microSD support, regrettably), the USB-C charging connector, and a single downward-firing speaker. The latter has amazingly strong sounds for something so compact but is a little lacking in detail.

However, the weight of the Red Magic 6R should not be overlooked. It weighs 186g, which is about average for a contemporary smartphone but substantially less than the 220g Red Magic 6 and 6 Pro.

Display

The 6.67inch display of the Nubia Red magic 6R smartphone feels substantial, and it’s also quite crisp at HD+. On a true gaming phone, where the frame rate is king, you don’t want or need QHD.

To that end, the Red magic 6R has a smooth 144Hz maximum refresh rate, which is a notch higher than most standard flagship phones’ 120Hz limit. True, the Nubia Red magic 6S Pro can reach 165Hz, but that’s only for show. Most games won’t even extend to 120Hz, which may be why Nubia sets the refresh rate at 90Hz by default.

According to Nubia, its phone has an adaptive refresh rate adjustment functionality that switches between 30Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz depending on the game or app. But don’t confuse this with the subtle, smoothly scaled LTPO panel technology seen in devices such as the iPhone 13 Pro and the OnePlus 9 Pro.

The 360Hz touch sampling rate of the Nubia Red magic 6R smartphone will be equally appealing to gamers. This is half the speed of the Nubia Red magic 6S Pro or the Lenovo Legion Duel 2, although it is the same as the Asus ROG Phone 5.

In terms of display quality, it’s a vivid and mostly color-accurate AMOLED. In my personal colorimeter testing, it achieved 99.8 percent sRGB coverage in its normal Vivid setting, and although that’s very excellent overall, more discerning eyes may spot some saturation discrepancies.

Nubia claims a peak brightness of up to 770cd/m2, which corresponds to the smartphone in an auto-brightness mode in very bright settings.

Specifications & Performance

Despite its mid-range pricing, the Red Magic 6R boasts top-tier specifications. Many of these features are shared by the more costly Red Magic 6, including Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 processor. This has a powerful Adreno 660 GPU and 8GB of RAM, however, 6GB or 12GB of RAM are also available.

The Red Magic 6R’s performance is outstanding when combined with its 144Hz refresh rate and 400Hz touch sampling rate. It breezes through online surfing, emails, texts, movies, and multitasking, but high-end gaming is where the phone truly shines.

Many games do not support higher refresh rates. However, they all offer an immersive experience that is difficult to match on a smartphone. This is especially true when playing demanding games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9, which can cause some similarly priced devices to struggle.

The latter is when the device’s shoulder triggers on the right side come into play. They may, as the name implies, be used to fast-fire opponents, freeing up your thumbs for other tasks. When combined with the fast refresh rate, this might offer you a significant advantage during intense combat or racing games.

Software & Features

The software is a jumbled mess of weird choices. On the one hand, the Game Space launcher/gaming-centric app’s features function well and are incredibly useful if you want to squeeze out additional performance by changing your settings. The ability to instantly record a game and its source audio are also quite useful, and the customizable capacitive triggers might be beneficial for shooters like PUBG and Fortnite. The game software was meticulously designed by RedMagic. However, features such as the launcher have fallen by the wayside.

Although there is no special button for it, Nubia’s Game Space mode is still present. It functions similarly to previous Red Magic phones, enhancing performance and reducing distractions for a more interactive experience. Instead of flipping the slider on the phone’s side, you’re prompted to open Game Space when you launch a suitable game.

One of the best features of Android is the variety of customization choices. However, they are quite scarce in this location. The biggest letdown is that you can only use the default launcher — there is no option to modify it without jailbreaking. And this is very restrictive.

Cameras

If Nubia wants to appeal to more ordinary people with the Red Magic 6R, cameras become increasingly important. The gadget features the same 64Mp wide and 8Mp ultrawide sensors as the original 6, but the macro is increased to 5Mp and a new 2Mp depth sensor is included.

Unfortunately, the results aren’t noticeably better than what we’ve seen from Red Magic phones in the past. Stills aren’t horrible by any means. However, they fall short of what we’ve come to expect from smartphone cameras.

The 6R has a tendency to generate photos that are either washed out or have too much contrast – there is little in the center. That means that while some images are attractive to the eye, they aren’t really realistic to live. It also makes the camera untrustworthy because you can’t rely on it to continuously deliver the same quality. You can change this in the camera’s ‘Pro’ mode, but the Red Magic 6R lacks a good point-and-shoot camera.

Having said that, there’s still a lot to like here. The wide-angle lens provides a lot of flexibility, while the specialized night mode produces fantastic results in low light. Even with beauty mode on by default, an improved 16Mp front-facing camera provides excellent quality in selfies.

Video recording

On the video front, the Red Magic 6R can capture up to 8K footage at 30fps, although most users will be content with 1080p at 60fps. Electronic image stabilization (EIS) is included at all resolutions except 8K, ensuring that footage remains smooth when moving.

Battery life

The battery life is also excellent, and although we only get 4200mAh this time, you’ll easily get a full 24 hours out of the gadget before needing to charge it. And, with the supplied 30-watt charger, you’ll be able to charge it to full capacity in just an hour.

When it comes to charging speeds, there is some geographical difference. The Chinese form of the Red Magic 6R can withstand 66W, but the worldwide version is restricted to 30W. The adapter is at least supplied, and it charged the smartphone up to 60% in just 30 minutes.

Is Nubia Red Magic 6R smartphone good for gaming?

The Red Magic 6R is a smaller, lighter variant of the Red Magic 6 with the same high-end specifications. At this lower price range, it’s an excellent phone for gaming & much more.

Is Red Magic 6 waterproof?

It might be difficult to see properly in a bright room or outside. The RedMagic 6 is also somewhat hefty, making one-handed gameplay difficult. It lacks an IP classification for dust and water protection, as well as wireless charging.

Conclusion

The Nubia Red magic 6R is rare among gaming phones in that it was created with at least some attention paid to how you’d want to use the phone when you’re not shooting headshots.

With a tiny chassis and a rather plain style, it’s as easy to use and carry around as a regular phone. Thankfully, it still delivers when it comes to gaming, with a level of performance that much exceeds the phone’s price tag.

Unfortunately, the phone is crushed between two stools. Elements like a gleaming selfie camera and a lack of stereo speakers will irritate gamers, while non or casual gamers will see the phone’s bad camera system and poor battery life as obvious red flags.

The Nubia Red magic 6R is still a contender for a specific sort of casual gamer due to its mix of top-tier performance and lower mid-range pricing, but it isn’t quite the perfect all-rounder users hoped it would be.
