For years, Dell XPS 15 has been one of the greatest laptops for creators, and the Dell XPS 15 (9520) model is no exception. It combines a 4.3-pound chassis with the capability of Intel’s 12th-generation 45W CPUs and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics, all while delighting users with a 3.5K OLED display or a powerful quad-speaker arrangement. It isn’t ideal. Dell continues to favor low bezels over a good webcam, which is problematic in the era of working at home. Furthermore, the cost of components is rising, and gadget prices are rising.

Dell’s designers worked tirelessly to make the XPS 15 the pinnacle of a full-size laptop. When closed, the bare-metal lid & chassis present a striking appearance. Suppose Dell’s Platinum Silver color isn’t your thing. In that case, you can always go for Frost White, which gives its XPS an even more severe appearance yet comes off as fashionable without being flashy in an office.

When opened, the XPS 15’s OLED display provides an edge-to-edge image with skinny bezels around it. The 16:10 aspect-ratio panel has a resolution of 3,456-by-2,160 pixels, which Dell refers to as “3.5K” to suggest that it is nearly a match for 16:9 panels with a 4K (3,840-by-2,160) pixel count. The 15.6-inch panel has everything you’d expect from an OLED display: deep, rich blacks, razor-sharp detail, and bright color. It also is a touch screen, so have a towel nearby to wipe away fingerprints and smudges.

Despite the tiny bezels, the XPS 15 has room above the display for a 720p camera with Windows Hello facial recognition for safe logins. The camera lacks a movable privacy shutter, and unlike the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro, there is no notch extending into the display area.

Display of the Dell XPS 15 (9520)

The XPS 15’s 15-inch OLED display appears to hover above the keyboard. Even though many other computer makers have been decreasing the bars around computer displays, its small bezels stand out. The 16:10 aspect ratio allows ample workspace, displaying more material with less scrolling. The OLED display offers a resolution of 3456 x 2160, which isn’t quite 4K but comes close.

Dell’s display is vibrant and bright, though not the most dazzling.

The XPS 15 covered 85.9% of the DCI-P3 gamut & 123.3% of the sRGB gamut. That outperforms both Gigabyte Aero 16 and the MacBook Pro. The Ideapad Slim 7 Carbon took first place in this category, with 139.3 percent of a DCI-P3 gamut & 197 percent of the sRGB gamut.

Keyboard:

Keyboard: Dell XPS 15 (9520)

As previously stated, the palm support is black carbon fiber, and the keyboard is black, with Chiclet-style keys. The keyboard is both pleasant and accurate, albeit it falls short of a ThinkPad X1 Extreme, considering that ThinkPads were known for having the greatest keyboards. While it isn’t as quiet, its force curve is more pronounced.

Dell’s keyboard features nice chiclet keys if a little mushy and spongy. The major complaint is the half-height upwards arrow keys. Dell will change the arrows to an “inverted T.”

The keys are illuminated with white lights, controlled by an F5 key function. Surprisingly, the F9 key serves no further use. Dell would be wise to include a full set of multimedia keys and remove the Windows shortcut to modify second screen settings. The keyboard is comfortable and spacious. It was responsive and supported all of Windows 11’s more complex gestures. It clicks a little softly.

The bottom case of the XPS 15 is secured in place by eight Torx T5 screws. Dell should think about using Philips’s heads. You’ll need to do something to pull the system’s case off. Dell’s repair documentation suggests separating the left and right sides before removing the base.

Because the RAM is slotted, you may update or replace it later. There really are two M.2 SSD slots, so if this one is only half full, you can easily add extra storage later. The battery may also be replaced.

Price and Availability

Price and Availability

The Dell XPS 15 9520, announced last spring, is now available for purchase, starting at $1,449. The entry-level model included a Core i5-12500H processor, 8GB DDR5 memory, a 256GB SSD, or an FHD+ display. It will not feature any specialized visuals.

As is customary, there are several possibilities. It comes with up to 64GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, and the panel offers two 4K choices (technically, the OLED one is termed 3.5K), one of which is OLED and the other isn’t. The CPU can be upgraded to a Core i9-12900HK, while the graphics card may be upgraded to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti.

There are two distinct hues. The Platinum Silver model comes with a black carbon fiber keyboard deck. It has a traditional XPS appearance. On the other hand, Frost has a white braided glass fiber keyboard deck.

Is Dell XPS 15 worth buying?

The Dell XPS 15 has been at the pinnacle of its performance and remains the finest 15-inch laptop available.  Dell’s XPS 15 (9510) is the finest 15-inch laptop available. It had the ideal mix of an appealing, well-built slim, and light chassis, good performance, and a stunning 3.5K OLED display.

Does the XPS 15 overheat?

Every computer, in the end, can overheat, or the Dell XPS 15 is no different. The Dell XPS 15″ is meant to be powerful and to let you run programs that demand a lot of power, such as gaming and processing apps.

How long does XPS 15 last?

The Dell XPS 15 2020 can go through most of a typical workday on a single charge, but you’ll want to keep a charger nearby. Dell’s laptop last 8 hours and 1 minute, which is adequate for a 4K laptop but still falls short of several important competitors.

Conclusion

The Dell XPS 15 9520 is as stylish as it is powerful. A 12th Gen Intel H-series CPU and an RTX 3050 Ti will perform for this. You also get a brilliant screen, including its OLED option, even if others scan brighter. Those seeking a little more power and an equally luxury style may prefer the MacBook Pro. The 16-inch model with just an M1 Max for $4,299 had more RAM & memory, although an M1 Pro would be less expensive. The battery life is where the Mac shines.
