What is New Super Mario Bros. U?
New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is very much similar to any Mario game you have played. In this game, all you need to do is walk, run, and jump through a 2D space, stomp on enemies and cross obstacles and gaps. Like the other game, Mario gets power-ups. Also, Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Tanooki Suits, and others help him fend off enemies and move ahead to complete levels. But the game doesn’t end with this, you get many other features with this game. You can play as multiple characters, play with your friends, and explore levels from a different perspective than you previously played them in.
Play with friends
With the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, you get endless playing options. You can play solo, or with up to four players at a time, each using a Joy-Con or other controller. You can interact with your friends with the help of your characters. Also, you can toss one another and jump on each other’s heads to cross challenging gaps or to throw one another into lava.
What is special in the Deluxe version?
The Deluxe version is not simply the game with better visuals, there are many other features and improvements from the original New Super Mario and Luigi U games. In the Deluxe version, the biggest difference you will find is the character roster. There are five playable characters- Mario, Luigi, Nabbit, Toad, and Toadette. For the Toad character, you can play as “Yellow Toad” just like the original games. But the Blue Toad has been removed and replaced with Toadette. To play with the Blue Toad you can choose to change the color of the Yellow Toad. For this, you have to press the “ZL” button on the character and select the screen when Yellow Toad is chosen.
Toadette is a new character addition to the new version. She can transform into a character called Peachette when she picks up a Super Crown in the game. When she transforms, she gets Peach-like powers like floating. If you are a beginner, this is a great character to start with. This is because it is quite hard for this character to fall off the stage.
Also, if you are stuck and don’t seem to make any progress, you can access the Hints gallery. When you do so, a Super Guide will finish levels for you and you get reference videos for completing different levels. Whereas, if you find the game too easy, you can choose from three new modes. Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle modes offer complex challenges. Moreover, you get all the DLC content from New Super Luigi U for free in the game.
Super Crown
One of the new items added to the game is the Super Crown. It appears when you hit certain blocks just like you collect power-ups. But the catch is, if you are playing with any other character than Toadette, you can only see the Super Crown. Only Toadette can pick it up, and turn it into Peachette. Moreover, don’t get confused with fan arts you can see on social media about other characters transforming with the help of Super Crown. Those characters don’t exist in the actual game.
When Toadette transforms into Peachette, she becomes a floaty character. She can double jump and avoid falling often and reach high-up areas easily. Once she gets hit by an enemy or picks up another power-up like Fire Flower she loses the Super Crown.
New Super Luigi U
Originally New Super Luigi U was released for New Super Mario Bros U during Nintendo’s Year of Luigi in 2013. In the original version, you could play as the main character Luigi throughout the game. Also, Mario was replaced by Nabbit in the game as he was not playable at all as part of this DLC. Whereas Luigi was slightly different from Mario. Also, many levels were adjusted to go along with his higher jumps and floaty movement.
You get all these even in the New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe but with some other features. You can play any of the possible characters- Mario, Luigi, Toad, Nabbit, and Toadette. Moreover, you can even play with Luigi’s floaty movements in the Mario levels and Mario’s more stable movement in Luigi levels.
What about amiibo feature?
Although the new version comes loaded with new cool features, it does not have the amiibo feature. It is not present in the New Super Mario Bros. U as well as the Deluxe version. But it is quite possible that the future updates bring back the amiibo push-button for Mario.

Do I need Wi-Fi to play this game?
You will need internet access or Wifi to play this game as it’s updated regularly; however, I believe you can play this without Wifi if you have downloaded this game and there is no recent update that requires downloading any new content.
