The Dell G5 15 Gaming (5500) is the latest gaming laptop from the Texan computer powerhouse, and this heavyweight contender offers enticing technology at a reasonable price.
In other words, an alternative to Dell’s Alienware laptops for those who can’t buy one.
Dell presently offers five G5 variants in the UK. The Core i7-10750H CPU and the 144Hz display are used in four of them, including this one.
Their cost range is £849.00, with differences in essential features such as The GTX 1660 Ti. It is an esports-capable GPU without Ray-Tracing, is more reasonable, while the RTX 2070 Max-Q is more expensive. The computer also comes with 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD in the more expensive models.
The AMD Ryzen 5 4600H engine outperforms Intel’s Core i7-10750H in most productivity tasks. It also comes with AMD Radeon RX 5600M graphics, which are adequate for 1080p gaming and esports but slower than the GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060.
Amazon and Currys PC World both have it in stock.
Further variants are similar to those available in the UK, with Core i7 processors, 144Hz displays, and more powerful GPUs.
The American machines can also be customized with varying storage capacities and 240Hz displays on the more expensive variants. Unfortunately, Dell advertises an AMD-based Special Edition computer with the excellent Ryzen 7 4800H processor and Radeon RX 5600M graphics for $1,299.00 in the United States.
The Dell G5 is finished in “Interstellar Black,” however the black material is really coated with glitter. It isn’t always extravagant – in fact, from some angles, the lid appears to be polished – but it makes the Dell stand out. The back of the desk has large air vents, and the base has RGB LEDs that make the desk shine.
It’s visually appealing, but the design isn’t particularly spectacular. The shining lid will divide opinion, and the RGB LED lights, plastic cover, and huge air vents appear to be a little old.
The G5 is 25mm thick and 2.34kg in weight, so it’s not exactly thin or light. The more expensive MSI GS66 Stealth and the less expensive Acer Predator Helios 300 are both smaller and lighter 15.6in laptops.
If you’re looking to lose weight, the 14-inch Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 weighs only 1.6kg and has an 18mm body.
A G5 15 Gaming is also average in other areas. The base has a little give to it, and the single-hinged lid moves too much.
It has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port and a Type-C connection that supports DisplayPort, but no speedier USB 3.2 Gen 2 support and only two full-size USB 2.0 ports.
The power button on the Dell serves as a fingerprint reader, although it’s a little too mushy. There’s a 720p webcam with average quality and no support for Windows Hello.
The Dell G5 15 Gaming (5500) has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card and also an Intel Core i7-10750H processor. They are two of the most popular gaming laptop components right now.
16GB of memory, Wi-Fi 6, and Gigabit Ethernet complete the list of features. There’s a 512GB SSD with 2,308MB/s and 1,270MB/s read and write speeds, but no backup hard disc.
The RTX 2060 is a capable graphics card. It delivered Ultra settings framerates of 79fps and 98fps in Far Cry New Dawn and Wolfenstein, respectively — the former is better than any competitor, while the latter is in the middle of the MSI and Acer. The G5 received a score of 36,071 in Sky Diver, which is somewhat higher than both competitors.
There’s enough speed to play single-player games at high settings effortlessly, and eSports titles will readily operate at the 144Hz refresh rate.
The Dell has a below-average thermal performance. Noise levels are minimal when gaming, especially if you’re playing less-demanding games, and even at maximum volume, a headset will readily hide the noise. The area above the keyboard, as well as the base panel, becomes warm.
If you use it on your lap, the underside will be uncomfortable. When using work tools, it’s also a little noisier and hotter. This laptop is better for gaming than for work, and it works best when you’re sitting at a desk.
Dell fights back with a long-lasting battery. It lasted just over eight hours in video playback and handled six hours of work. If you’re careful, you can get a full day at the office out of this machine. It has a more traditional gaming lifespan of one hour and forty-three minutes, but it’s on par with the MSI, not far behind the little Asus, and miles ahead of the Acer.
A 15.6-inch TN display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a 144 Hz refresh rate comes standard on the Dell G5 15 5500.
Thankfully, it’s paired with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics, which should be able to handle the high refresh rate in most games with ease.
A M.2 connector (for a PCIe SSD), as well as a 2.5-inch drive bay, are both supported by the Dell G5 15 Gaming (5500). (for a hard disc drive).
The 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD from SK Hynix is included. In select areas, Dell also offers a 512 GB Intel Optane storage option.
This is more than enough capacity for a gaming laptop. There is also a 1 TB SSD and a 2 TB hard disc drive option if you need more.
The 720p webcam of the Dell G5 15 SE is mediocre, as is the case with most laptop webcams.
In the meanwhile, the 720p HD webcam on the display’s top bezel should be enough for Zoom calls. The power button also has a fingerprint sensor that can be used to sign in to Windows Hello.
Cheap gaming laptops are your best bet if you’re looking for a video editing laptop for around $1,000. A laptop like the Dell G5 15 SE (2020), which has an AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU and a respectable display, may suffice for some of your more demanding jobs.
The Dell G5 15 laptop is a fast gaming machine with strong application performance and long battery life, but it’s also bad in a number of critical areas: the keyboard and touchpad are lackluster, it’s thicker and heavier than its competitors, and the screen is pale.
Because of these flaws, they pale in contrast to laptops with faster processors, thinner, sleeker chassis, better screens, and snappier keyboards.
If you’re searching for a laptop with an RTX 2060 GPU, the Dell isn’t the best option. It only makes sense if you’re going to choose one of the less expensive configurations.
If you’re looking for a GTX 1650 Ti or GTX 1660 Ti-based laptop for esports or popular games, it’s a good option that’s on par with competitors at this price point, where problems are more tolerable.
