The Alienware gaming laptops from Dell can be quite inconsistent. There will always be some chaff that has to be distinguished from the wheat, given the almost absurdly wide variety of models available. The new Alienware M15 R7, a well-rounded 1080p gaming computer with a bright 12th-gen Intel processor at its core, falls squarely into the cereal grain category.
At first glance, the M15 R7 seems almost identical to any Alienware laptop produced in recent years. It has an indented screen opening and a large ring of RGB lighting down the back edge. At the same time, the familiar alien-head emblem is brightly blue-lighted. We can’t hold it against Dell for keeping this tried-and-true design; if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.
Before checking out, US and UK customers can virtually design their ideal Alienware M15 R7. The Australian website also has this function, albeit with a much smaller range.
For the specifications stated, the price is high. The version with the lowest price tag is such Intel Core i9-12700H processor, an RTX 3050 Ti graphics card, 16GB of DDR5, and a half terabyte of Storage space. This model costs $1,499 and offers a less brisk but respectable 165Hz frame rate on its display.
A 360Hz display is among the Alienware M15 R7’s distinguishing features, and it’s a great screen all around. Although certainly not the finest in a gaming laptop, maximum brightness and color reproduction are rich and crisp. If the image quality is more important to you, some SKUs offer a 1440p version with a 240Hz frame rate.
The battery life of gaming laptops isn’t precisely renowned for being long. The 89Whr battery, which drives an Alienware M15 R7, seems subpar.
Even if many gaming laptops are identical, we’ve still seen better. Video playback performed a little better, coming close to four hours. However, assuming the user starts with a full charge, you should be able to watch at least a movie without requiring to plug in. However, playing games won’t likely offer you much more than 2 hours until you need to plug in that bulky AC adaptor.
The decent keyboard and the incredible amount of essential travel, around 1.8mm, mean that typos are minimized. If you press hard upon the keys in the center, the keyboard will somewhat flex, but considering its plastic composition, this is to be expected. Although the trackpad seems a little on the small side, it is very responsive, and for gaming, you’ll probably be using a mouse anyway.
In gaming evaluations at 1080p Ultra settings, the RTX 3070 Ti and the Alienware M15 R7 quickly cleared 60 frames per second in everything we threw at it. Valiant and CS: GO, two esports games with framerates that can easily approach the hundreds, should benefit from the 360Hz refresh rate.
The chassis never got much warmer than a little heated. If you take care of it, the Alienware M15 R7 will endure for many years without experiencing thermal problems. However, that shortens the life of its internal components.
A pair of boisterous fans—among the noisiest we’ve seen in many years —compromise this excellent heat dissipation. Setting it to “high-performance mode” fear that it would take off and burst a hole in the office wall, but even while performing routine things like surfing Chrome or exploring the Windows settings, the fans would start to make a loud whine.
A big ’15’ engraving occupies a portion of the top, and the hexagon-patterned grille for both the speakers and air intake is still located above the keyboard. The Alienware logo is still on the back of the screen, lighted by RGB LEDs, and another serves as the power button.
Over the past few years, it has evolved into the iconic design for Dell’s gaming laptop line. While we’d like to see it updated a bit, it is still aesthetically pleasing. The all-plastic chassis has a slightly cheap feeling, but the matte coating looks nice and effectively deters fingerprints.
Play video games in 1080p.
Although a 1440p model is offered, we contend that a 1080p display with all graphics settings set to their highest makes this laptop the most suitable for high-framerate gaming.
You appreciate the design of Alienware.
We must acknowledge that Dell has created an instantly identifiable and elegant style for its Alienware machines, though it isn’t for everyone. This device does as well; it shouts “gaming” from the get-go.
You need a long-lasting battery.
The battery life of an Alienware M15 R7 ranges from “just okay” to “abysmal,” which may be standard with several gaming laptops today, but it still makes us sad.
You have a tight budget.
Although we believe that Alienware RTX 3070 Ti version is a fairly good bargain, this is still a pricy device. And other, less expensive laptops are available. Remember that you’ll pay good money for the stylish Alienware branding and design here.
In the United States, the Alienware m15 R7 is now on sale in the spring of 2022 for a starting price of $1499. In the United States, the Alienware m17 R5 start at $1599 in the spring of 2022.
The Alienware M15 R7, including its plastic body with a bulkier profile, adheres to the same design aesthetic as the model it replaces. The R7 doesn’t feel as substantial as these more expensive devices. However, if you don’t intend to carry it around, you’ll like its substantial weight.
A beast, the Alienware M15 R7. The newest model in Alienware’s mid-range portfolio posts stats that can’t be disagreed with. The display looks beautiful while forgoing a more opulent form factor.
