Amazon updates the Amazon Fire HD 2021 to deliver a very good tablet for $150, as long as what you want to do is control Alexa and consume Amazon books and media. Even without the Google Play store, it’s the best tablet you can get for less than $200.
One of the great things about the Fire HD 10 is that it packs the same features as the Amazon Echo Show. So, when the company announced the Alexa-enabled Fire HD 10 at CES in 2021, it was nice to see that it offered the same features that made the Echo Show such a great media streaming device so that the Fire HD 10 would have the broadest appeal.
Well, with Amazon updating its tablets to improve their performance on a small form factor, the Fire HD 10 is a very nice tablet for the price. The size is perfect for reading and watching videos. However, it does not work well as a computer replacement unless you have a mouse with you at all times.
The Fire HD 10 is big. Really big. At a little over (10.3 x 5.8 x 0.34) inches, it’s bigger and heavier than the Galaxy Tab S4 (9.4 x 6.6 x 0.31 inches), and bigger and heavier than the 10.5-inch iPad Pro (9.4 x 6.5 x 0.3 inches). The iPad is thinner, however, weighing only 1 pound, 6 ounces, versus 1.02 pounds, 9 ounces for the Fire HD 10.
The Fire HD 10 has a plastic back, so you can take it with you without fear of breakage. It has a “rounded edge,” so if you hold it vertically, your fingers will touch the front, and if you hold it horizontally, your fingers will barely touch the back. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s so thin that the tablet almost feels like it’s not there, which is nice.
When you think of tablets, the first images you usually have are probably of an iPad Pro or a Pixel Slate. These are the two best tablets for graphic designers, creators, and students.
The Fire HD 10 isn’t as cutting edge in terms of design or internals, but what it does better than these two tablets offer the best value for money. A large 10.1″ display with 720p resolution is very sharp and easy to read in daylight.
Colors aren’t as vivid as on the Pixel Slate, but the Fire HD 10 is easier on the eyes due to its larger display.
The HD 10 has an edge over the Pixel Slate in terms of viewing angles, but both have good wide angles and the FHD display on the Fire HD 10 is a lot easier to use for reading and gaming.
Amazon drives the 2021 Fire HD 10 with Mediatek’s Helio P60T, the very processor that is in the 2019 Fire HD 10. It conveys around half preferable web browsing execution over the chip in the Fire HD 8 model, as per the Basemark Web benchmark—a critical, observable improvement.
On the generally PCMark Work 3.0 benchmark, the HD 10 scored 5376, far superior to the HD 8’s 4290. It likewise accompanies 3GB of RAM, more than the 2GB in the Fire HD 8 and the 2019 HD 10. That makes for a considerably more liquid experience exchanging applications, particularly assuming you’re utilizing efficient applications like Microsoft Office. This is the primary Amazon tablet on which I never encountered a stoppage or falter.
Battery life: 7 hours
Tablet Software: Android OS
Consoles/PC Inputs: Not Available
Overall:
The Fire HD 10 is the first Fire device that I’ve seen that is a real tablet and not a half-measure where you can only use it for watching Netflix and a few other video apps. It’s a full-blown tablet that can be an almost perfect substitute for a PC or even a Mac when it comes to consuming media.
My complaint? The device just costs too much. While it’s $150, it’s more than twice as expensive as most iPads yet has just as good a screen and keyboard case. It also has a better keyboard.
It has only been on sale for about four months, and if it’s the best Fire tablet ever, I’d say it’s the best Fire tablet ever.
OS: Fire OS Synopsis
Amazon Fire OS has a score of 7,000 or so pre-loaded apps and games that work just fine. Many are also available from Amazon, but there’s no Google Play to save you. Other things to keep in mind: the included Alexa Voice Remote is a nice add-on. And a very good device for Amazon‘s excellent Alexa digital assistant. But unlike other Alexa-capable devices, the Fire HD 2021 doesn’t come with a regular old remote. It’s a good one, though, because it comes with a headphone jack, so you can wear it to bed to listen to your music.
Design
The Fire HD 2021 comes in 10- and 7-inch sizes. The 10-inch version offers a 1920 x 1200, 16:10 screen.
Colors:
Black, Denim, Olive, Lavender
Camera:
Sensors: Accelerometer and Ambient Light Sensor
Storage: 32 GB
The Fire HD 10 replaces the Fire HD 10’s predecessor: the 2017 Amazon Fire HD 10. The 7th Generation has an improved 2GHz octa-core processor., dual speakers, an improved display, and Dolby Audio. On paper, it’s a great upgrade for less money. Have 3GB of RAM.
In practice, the Fire HD 10 is on the lower end of the Fire tablet spectrum. However, I’m not sure that “lower-end” is the right word for the Fire HD 10. This tablet is best described as “solid”. The Fire HD 10 delivers a solid performance, even if it doesn’t have a good display as the iPad. The specs don’t include a second camera, which may be a deal-breaker for some. It also doesn’t have the 8 hours of battery life the Nexus 9 has.
