Mario Strikers: Battle League perfectly illustrates how Nintendo’s game approach has evolved. In previous Mario sports titles, there used to be many characters, unlockables, and skill-testing modes. But like Mario Golf: Super Rush from a year ago, Battle League is more of a foundation that Nintendo intends to fill up over time with free updates.

It’s a strategy that reflects a more contemporary Nintendo, eager to squeeze more use out of its games. But to do that, it must create games with a strong core experience. At its release, Mario Strikers: Battle League hopes to do that. Since this is the first Mario soccer game exclusively released since 2007, Next Level Games made a special effort to update and improve the gameplay. That portion is fantastic; the rest requires improvement.

Mario Strikers: Battle League may be the most complex and varied Mario sports experience, only in terms of gameplay. Simply said, the question is whether its sparsely written approach to the material can keep you interested long enough between its critical updates.

Forget about formation strategies first. Instead, focus on each character’s distinct stats as this is a 5v5 match. For instance, Toad is swift and excellent at passing, Bowser possesses strong attacks, and Luigi is your typical “all-arounder.” You should consider your selections, and you can select any member of your squad besides Boom Boom, the goalie. You attempt to debate points of view with a personified red shell.

Combat League offers three game modes, the first of which is the “rapid battle” option. From here, you may play online or against the computer, albeit the game only allows a maximum of eight players for local multiplayer. Prepare to divide those Joy-Cons, then.

Each character has the ability to shoot, pass, lob the ball, tackle, and hurl objects at the opposing team when they are prepared. They may even perform plays that FIFA players hope they could pull off. You now have a fast dodge you can reach by clicking the right joystick if you’re dribbling and there is no one to pass to. This is a useful feature.

Although you cannot control the goalie, Boom Boom is no pushover, and all actions may be powered up with consecutive passes. The secret to hitting him is to aim your bullets; pushing A randomly seldom succeeds.

Battle League rewards money for each match won, which can then be spent to unlock additional equipment like gloves and helmets. Playing the game requires a true feeling of expertise. You cannot produce a super player since each item increases one stat by two points while taking away two points from another. Mario may be a legend, but he is not a deity.

Setting Up

The major draw to playing is earning money that can be used to buy better gear, which may affect gameplay. One can customize their team as one sees fit by equipping different boots, shirts, pants, and headgear that enhance and reduce certain traits. These personalization possibilities are adorable, but they can’t take the place of genuine unlocked characters.

There are three game modes: Cup Battles, Quick Play, and Strikers Club. Quick Play is your typical game option where you may compete online or against the AI; the former allows you to partner up with another player, whether they are a friend or a stranger.

It’s terrible that matching doesn’t have two different pools for those playing as a team or going solo because playing as a duo is much more challenging.

The single-player game, Cup Battles, is dreadfully underdeveloped. In Normal Mode, you’ll begin by moving up a short tournament ladder against a laughably weak AI opponent. There is little diversity in this game, even if completing standard mode unlocks the far harder Galactic Mode, in which you may win semi-finals with a score of 17-1.

The primary game mode is Strikers Club, which is centered on seasons and allows users to build teams of up to 20 players. The objective is to increase the rankings while upgrading your stadium with the tokens you earn. The first season is yet to begin, though, which is an odd omission given that Battle League has only recently begun.

The absence of online 4-vs-4 play is the most obvious omission. Despite 4-vs-4 being feasible offline with four connected Switch consoles, for some reason, only pairs can team up to battle other players online.

Duo play is exceedingly difficult, and player indications become lost in a jumble of color, which doesn’t help the situation.

Keep it clean

Each character receives their special shot, previously only available to your team captain. And on sometimes, a bright “Strike Orb” may drop onto the playing surface; once gathered, it will charge your whole squad. The Hyper Strike only lasts for 20 seconds, but when fired from inside the opponent’s half, it can result in an unstoppable shot and a goal worth two points.

These scenes highlight Battle League’s stunning aesthetics. When characters make a strike, Hyper Strikes makes use of comic book-style panels.  For many Nintendo fans, witnessing Waluigi put a rose in his mouth during his shot is the stuff of nightmares. Battle League is a game full of little flourishes, and Next Level did a great job animating these moments.

Despite its complexity and unique rules, it’s a simple game to take up casually. Meanwhile, more competitive players will be happy to learn that play feels as balanced as a ball on a pro’s forehead. You can’t attack opponents with nearly the same power if a character isn’t strong enough, but you can find the lightfoot’s such Toad keep overtaking you as you run, making you have to keep passing.

Items often given to victims of a nasty tackle might help level the playing field if your opponent isn’t cooperative in other situations. Battle League borrows heavily from Mario Kart, including homing red shells, bananas, and bob-ombs, item use never feels out of control or poses a danger to the heart of Strikers’ gorgeous game.

Soccer’s fundamental gameplay is robust enough, but the Mario environment adds pleasure. The character animations in the game are among the greatest that ever been seen in a Mario game. Some of the most well-known ones, like Princess Peach needing to control her raging wrath after her opponent makes a shot, may already be trending on Twitter.

Between victory dances, irate outbursts, and brilliantly illustrated special shot animations, each of the game’s ten playable characters truly get to exhibit their personalities here. The best thing is when Wario uses his enormous butt to launch the ball like a cannonball toward the goalie.

Characters play more than simply decorative roles in the Mushroom Kingdom. They have a significant influence on gameplay. Each character has attributes that influence the speed, tackle power, shooting prowess, and other things. These characteristics may be modified by unlocked gear in four locations, increasing certain stats while decreasing others.

The “strike” shots are the game’s distinguishing characteristic. A luminous orb will appear on the field at random intervals. When a player does, their entire squad is given a boost. By holding down A, gamers may slow down time and fire a special shot with two well-timed button hits. It’s worth two points if it goes in.

Since every second matters, comebacks are considerably simpler to achieve, making every crucial game moment crucial.

The size of Battle League’s arenas is the first thing to go when it gets shrunk. Even while games are still 5-vs-5, the smaller fields make the action feel constrained. The opposition side will frequently lunge at you with crushing tackles or knock you down with tools like red shells or bob-ombs, so you won’t spend much time on the ball. Getting the target of repeated tackles may be extremely irritating.

However, this close-range game also encourages remarkably deep offensive play, with players able to time their through-balls, lobs, and shoots to maximize their precision and force.

It takes practice to string up flawless passes and crosses before scoring a thunderous volley. Several clever secrets are hidden here that aren’t sufficiently covered by its tutorial.

Players may choose where they want the ball to travel, for example, by holding ZL when passing or crossing. This enables you to swiftly charge up a shot without transferring the ball between teammates by hitting the ball off the arena walls.

There is just one special Strike animation per character. Therefore, you will repeatedly watch the same short sequences even though each character is individually animated and has its own unique Hyper Strike.

Does Mario Strikers have a story mode?

Simply put, Mario Strikers Battle League lacks a narrative mode. There are single-player options, but none of them must follow a narrative structure as a traditional story campaign would. In Mario Strikers Battle League, the Cup Battles mode is closest to a narrative mode.

Is Mario Strikers free?

The Mario Strikers: Battle League First Kick demo is available for free download from the Nintendo eShop.

Can you play Mario Strikers on switch?

The Mario Strikers: Battle League game is available on Nintendo.com or the Nintendo Switch system.

Conclusion

The fundamental gameplay of Mario Strikers: Battle League is enjoyable, but it’s not enough to justify the very little bundle provided. With it, as with Mario sports games in general, there isn’t much to do for online gamers and much less for those searching for a good offline single-player game. For the third installment in the Mario Strikers series, Nintendo fans were hoping for a hat trick but instead received their own goal.

The Mushroom Kingdom cast has more personality than ever, and the matches are intense with wonderfully subtle team play. Nintendo has yet to demonstrate that it understands how to succeed with long-term maintenance, but it is hoped that a continuous DLC release might liven the game up over time.
