Moto G 5G plus with a better chipset, battery life and screen quality!

Share

What is the Moto G 5G Plus, and how does it differ from the Moto G 5G? For starters, it’s a mouthful of a name, and it’s the first 5G-compatible entry in Motorola’s budget G line; it’s also the cheapest 5G phone in the places. But it’s the Motorola Edge Lite in all but name, more than any of those things.

It’s difficult to place this phone in the same series as the Moto G8 and G Power. It introduces several significant changes to the G8 / G line’s staples.

Two front-facing cameras, all of which its predecessors lacked. The fingerprint sensor is on the side, not the back, and is incorporated within the power button. On a Moto G phone, this is also the largest screen.

Motorola’s low-cost smartphone lineup has gotten out of hand recently. With a slew of Motorola One and Moto G-themed smartphones on the market, all at a similar price point. The Moto G 5G Plus may be the finest of the lot. With a massive 5,000mAh battery, a large 21:9 90Hz display, excellent performance, and the ability to capture excellent photos.

While the Moto G 5G Plus is surprisingly capable on the inside, it isn’t the most attractive smartphone on the market right now. The Moto G 5G Plus, on the other hand, is a good option if you value the function above form.

Price and availability

The Moto G 5G Plus is available for £199.99 / $179.99 for a 128GB / 6GB model In the United States, the latter setup is the only option.

The phone underlines the Huawei P40 Lite 5G, which was for a brief period the cheapest 5G phone, by around £20 in the UK, and there are no 5G phones available for less at the time of writing.

Design

Even when compared to the Moto G8 Plus, the Moto G 5G Plus is clearly a plus-sized device. The G 5G Plus is larger than its brothers, with a larger screen. It’s not overly wide, so most people will be able to carry it comfortably.

The phone’s measurements are 168 x 74 x 9mm, which means it’s about the same length and thickness as a typical smartphone but not quite as wide. It’s a little heavier than the usual phone at 207g, but not by much.

The screen takes up the bulk of the front of the phone, with only a thin bezel and the dual punch-hole cutouts for the cameras separating it.

The phone’s back has a square camera bump that doesn’t protrude too much. It also has a huge flash module and Motorola branding. Although the phone has a plastic back, it feels solid and not cheap, as some other plastic phones may.

The side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Moto G 5G Plus is a pleasant surprise. Considering fingerprint scanners on Moto G phones are usually found on the rear. This is located on the right edge, immediately below the volume rocker, on the power button. However, you just need to touch it with your thumb to wake the phone.

The Moto G 5G Plus sports a USB-C port and, like other Moto phones, a 3.5mm headphone socket, so wired audio enthusiasts will be satisfied.

The phone is only available in one hue, a blue tint that will be familiar to anyone who has seen a Moto G phone, as it is the same color on all of them.

Cameras

When you consider that even the iPhone 11 Pro Max only has four cameras, the Moto G 5G Plus is quite the haul. However, like with other smartphone camera setups. The number does not always imply quality, and the phone is simply good for photography, not amazing.

A 16MP f/2.0 selfie camera sits on the front, with an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera for group photographs. When taken in well-lit situations, photos seem great, but when the light dims, they get a little grainy. Selfies have a lot of clarity. Especially when taken with the main camera, and bokeh effects in Portrait mode are often pleasing.

There’s a beauty mode for both conventional and ultra-wide selfies. It produced images that were quite literally terrible — it tends to smooth away the definition in facial features to a hilarious degree.

There’s no optical zoom here, but the 8x digital zoom was really better than we expected – zoomed-in images weren’t as blurry and awful as they can be.

Snaps taken with the ultra-wide camera had the same vibrancy issue as those produced with the main camera. There wasn’t as much edge distortion, which may be a feature of ultra-wide images and has been an issue with several Moto phones in the past.

The Moto G 5G Plus, like many other phones, can record 4K video. It’s unique in that it can do so in the 21:9 aspect ratio, which not many phones can accomplish, and if they do, it’s not at that resolution. Many movies are shot in this aspect ratio. Some people like to shoot home videos in this format as well.

However, few phones at this price point come with any kind of photography optimization software, so Motorola isn’t far behind the market – and the phone’s camera performs admirably versus similarly priced competitors.

Display

Motorola appears to have picked the G 5G Plus to add the longer aspect ratio to the Moto G series, following the implementation of 21:9 screens on its Motorola One and Edge lines.

The Moto G 5G Plus has the drawback that all 21:9 phones have in that it’s quite long and can be difficult to fit into a pocket, but it also has the benefits it’s relatively thin and thus easy to hold, and you’ve got enough space to view two apps at once, while movies can be watched without the blacked-out ‘letterbox’ bars at the top and bottom.

The screen on the Moto G 5G Plus is 6.7 inches diagonally, making it the largest Moto G phone to date and one of Motorola’s largest handsets, along with the Edge devices.

You’re looking at a resolution of 1080 x 2520, which translates to 2K. It is very standard for a phone screen resolution at this price point, though some competitors only offer 720p screens.

The screen is generally pleasing to the eye, with its HDR10 designation providing a wide dynamic range. It also has a 90Hz maximum refresh rate, which makes navigating the phone feel smooth; you can reduce this to 60Hz if you want to save battery life but given the phone’s impressive battery life.

This is the first Moto G phone to boast a 90Hz display, It depends on where you live, it could be the cheapest phone to do so, as the capability has previously only been available on higher-end handsets.

Specs and performance

The Snapdragon 765G chipset powers the Moto G 5G Plus, which is normally seen in high-end phones but is also found in some more cheap smartphones like this. The phone is noticeably faster to operate than most other Moto G phones. Thanks to its existence, as well as the 4GB or 6GB RAM.

Programs load swiftly, switching between apps is seamless, and games run smoothly. Sure, this isn’t a high-end processor, and an app will occasionally load slowly or crash suddenly to remind you of that, but this is an uncommon event.

It came back with a score of 1822, which isn’t great but acceptable for a phone at this price point. Moto G 5G plus scores just above the Oppo Reno 2. It got 1739 and just below the Honor 9X Pro, which scored 1858. It also beats out the Motorola Edge, which uses the same processor and scored 1732.

The Moto G 5G Plus is a 5G phone, as the name implies, and your mileage with this new form of connectivity may vary based on region.

Many of the current uses of 5G, however, necessitate decent hardware – if you’re streaming movies and shows, you’ll want a good screen, and if you’re playing games online, you’ll want a good chipset – so glad Motorola didn’t skimp on this phone; otherwise, 5G might have felt a little useless.

Software

The Moto G 5G Plus runs Android 10. It means it’s exactly as Google intended it to be, with none of the extra features that most businesses add when forking it for their devices.

Motorola, on the other hand, brings a few unique tricks to the table. It allows you to access numerous features through gestures: When you shake the phone twice, Fast Torch turns on the flashlight, twisting the phone opens the camera app, and so on. These take a little getting used to, but once you do, they can be rather useful and entertaining — at least until you go for a run and find yourself continually triggering them all.

There’s also My UX, which Moto introduced with the Motorola Edge and allows you to customise the phone’s UI’s typeface, icon size, and colour palette. When you combine this with the broad number of helpful widgets included in stock Android, you have a lot of possibilities for customizing your phone.

An interesting feature that exploits the fingerprint sensor has been added to My UX: if you tap it twice while the phone is on, it will show up six quick links that you can simply select.

Battery life

Motorola’s Moto G series of phones are known for having large batteries. The Moto G 5G Plus is no different, boasting a 5,000mAh battery.

Whether just scrolling through social media every now and then or playing a bunch of games, streaming music, and watching Netflix on our lunch break, the Moto G 5G Plus lasted us the entire day every day.

However, the phone’s ability to live more than a day wasn’t always consistent. It felt very safe to charge it overnight. However, because few phones last a full second day of use.

The charging speed is 20W, which is a step up from most Moto G phones. While it’s not ‘rapid’ by any means, it’ll seem speedy to anyone used to Moto G phones.

The phone took slightly under two hours to charge to full capacity. However, it was at approximately 65 per cent after an hour on a charge, as with other front-loaded devices. Wireless charging isn’t available, but that’s to be expected for a phone this inexpensive.

Is Moto G 5G worth buying?

Yes, the Motorola G 5G is a worthwhile purchase. It is equipped with a fast Snapdragon 750G processor and a stock Android UI with 5G compatibility. It also boasts a large 5,000 mAh battery with support for 20W fast charging and a triple back camera arrangement. Thus the Moto G 5G is a good value for money.

Is Gorilla Glass available on the Moto G 5G?

The Motorola moto g 5G is a new smartphone with a single punch-hole display and a plastic back panel. A fingerprint sensor is located on the back of the device. It has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ LCD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and a refresh rate of 60 frames per second.

Is the Moto G 5G capable of wireless charging?

Unfortunately, Qi Wireless Charging is not available on your Motorola Moto G5.

Conclusion

The Moto G 5G Plus may appear uninspiring in comparison to other metal-and-glass mid-range smartphones. It more than makes up for it on the inside.

It has the same Snapdragon 765G processor and 4/6GB of RAM as the Motorola Edge, so it runs well, and the tall 21:9 6.7 display is ideal for watching movies on the go — as long as they’re traditional ultra-wide Hollywood blockbusters.

There’s also a great camera system, even if the 5MP Macro lens is a touch superfluous, and the 5,000mAh battery will carry you through the day without needing to recharge.

It isn’t the ideal smartphone, but it is a good all-arounder at a reasonable price.
