Meeting the Moment: The Role of AI in Empowering Teachers Amidst Challenges
Education is a field where we are constantly striving to “meet the moment”. The current scenario of widespread teacher burnout and professional shortages is both a challenge and an opportunity. The question we must ask is: how can we adequately prepare and support our teachers as they navigate increasingly intricate classrooms?
One potential solution to this problem may lie in the strategic incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate the process of providing feedback to educators during their training. It is well-established that timely, actionable feedback can play a crucial role in enhancing teacher development and boosting self-efficacy – an educator’s confidence in their ability to positively impact student learning. Studies have shown that self-efficacy can mitigate burnout, increase job satisfaction and enhance student performance.
Having spent nearly two decades assisting new teachers, I can testify to the power of prompt, practical feedback. When delivered efficiently, such feedback can revolutionize teaching practices, foster self-efficacy, and ultimately contribute to teacher retention and student learning. AI provides us with the tools to deliver this feedback more quickly and on a larger scale.
A Crisis Calling for Innovative Solutions
The ongoing teacher shortage crisis in the United States has reached alarming levels, with burnout being a major contributing factor. In fact, a recent study conducted by the University of Missouri revealed that a staggering 78% of public school teachers have considered leaving their profession since the onset of the pandemic.
Many educators, especially those in their training years, report feeling overwhelmed and under-challenged. This crisis calls for innovative solutions that address both the quality and longevity of teaching apprenticeships. One crucial element that is often missing from teacher development and training programs is immediate, data-driven feedback – a key driver of improvement in other high-performance areas. AI can provide this missing link by generating timely, efficient feedback, saving teachers time and potentially reducing burnout.
The Transformative Potential of AI-Powered Feedback
Recently, Relay Graduate School of Education conducted a pilot program with TeachFX, utilizing AI-powered feedback tools to enhance our teacher education programs. The results were promising: our cohort of first- and second-year teachers improved their classroom practices in several ways. They expanded student response options, used wait time more effectively, and asked more open-ended questions. Furthermore, the AI tools provided us with objective data on student-teacher interaction time, enhancing the quality of our faculty coaching sessions.
Program participants described the experience as “transformative” and found the AI tools accessible and effective. Here are four ways in which AI can support teacher training through effective feedback:
1. Enhancing Student Engagement with Real-Time Feedback
Research indicates that teachers often dominate class discussions, speaking for up to 80% of the time. This leaves little room for student input and engagement. AI tools can monitor conversation metrics in real-time, enabling teachers to identify patterns and adjust their teaching strategies to foster more interactive, student-centered classrooms.
2. Enabling Teachers to Concentrate on Effective Coaching
By creating detailed transcripts and visualizing classroom interactions, AI allows teachers to reflect independently on their teaching practices. This continuous feedback loop promotes growth without increasing workload.
3. Scaling High-Quality Feedback Across Programs
Our initial experiment with AI has grown to include almost 800 aspiring teachers. This scalability can help to address equity issues in teacher preparation. Regardless of the location or type of school to which a teacher candidate is assigned, AI can ensure consistent access to personalized, meaningful feedback.
4. Assisting Teachers in Recognizing and Building upon Their Strengths
AI can also help teachers recognize their own strengths, an area many educators struggle with. A strength-based approach can boost confidence and resilience, key attributes for a successful teaching career.
The Moment is Now
The current teacher shortage is undoubtedly a crisis, but it also offers us the opportunity to rethink how we support teachers. Every student deserves a teacher who knows how to engage them in a meaningful way, and every teacher deserves timely, actionable feedback. Now is the time to shape the role of AI in teacher preparation. Let’s utilize these tools to develop confident, effective teachers who can inspire the next generation of learners.
