Spotify Beta Tests “Artist Profile Protection” to Combat AI-generated Music Issues
In a move to combat the growing issue of AI-generated slop infiltrating music streaming platforms, Spotify is beta testing a novel solution – the “Artist Profile Protection” feature. This tool aims to give artists greater control over the tracks associated with their names on the music streaming service, as reported by TechCrunch.
The Problem of Wrongly Attributed Music
Spotify revealed in a blog post that music has been erroneously landing on incorrect artist pages across streaming services. This issue has been exacerbated by the influx of easily-produced AI tracks. The company stated, “That’s not the experience we want artists to have on Spotify, and that’s why we’ve made protecting artist identity a top priority for 2026.”
This announcement comes following Sony Music’s request to remove over 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists on multiple streaming platforms.
How “Artist Profile Protection” Works
The “Artist Profile Protection” allows artists in the beta test to review, approve, or decline releases delivered to Spotify. Only the releases approved by the artists will appear on their Spotify profiles, contribute to their stats, and appear in user recommendations.

Addressing the Issue of Incorrectly Attributed Tracks
Spotify explained that while the open distribution system has facilitated independent artists in releasing their music, it has also inadvertently created opportunities for mistakes and fraudulent activities. Tracks can mistakenly end up on the wrong artist’s profile due to metadata errors, confusion between artists with similar names, or malicious attempts to add music to a particular artist’s profile.
Such instances can negatively impact an artist’s catalog, stats, Release Radar, and the way fans discover their music. Spotify noted, “We know how frustrating this can be for both artists and fans alike and one of the top requests we’ve heard from artists over the past year is that you want more visibility before music appears under your name.”
Who Benefits from the New Feature?
Though not all artists will require this feature, it is particularly beneficial for those who have experienced repeated incorrect releases, those with common artist names, or those who wish for more control over what appears on their profile.
Artists participating in the beta test will see the “Artist Profile Protection” feature in their “Spotify for Artists” settings on desktop and mobile web. Upon turning the feature on, they will receive an email notification when music is delivered to Spotify with their name attached. They can then approve or decline the request accordingly.
