Netflix Ups Subscription Prices Yet Again
Netflix, the global streaming behemoth, has discreetly escalated its subscription costs. The platform’s most budget-friendly, ad-supported tier now demands a monthly fee of $8.99, a slight increase from the previous $7.99, as confirmed by Netflix to TechCrunch via email.
Revised Pricing for Standard and Premium Plans
The ad-free standard plan has also experienced a price hike, now costing $19.99 per month, a $2 surge from the former $17.99 monthly fee. Additionally, the premium plan witnessed a similar $2 increase, with the new cost set at $26.99 per month.
Additional Viewers Outside Household Bear the Brunt
Moreover, it’s becoming costlier to add extra viewers outside of your household. Adding a user to an ad-supported plan now comes with a price tag of $6.99, down from the previous $7.99. In contrast, for an ad-free plan, the cost of adding an extra viewer has risen to $9.99 from the earlier $8.99.
Netflix rationalized these changes to TechCrunch, stating that the increases are intended to mirror enhancements to its “wide range of entertainment” and the quality of its service.
Price Hikes First Noticed by Android Authority
These price hikes were first detected by Android Authority. Netflix has clarified that new members who register from March 26 will be subjected to the new plan prices, while the revised prices will be gradually implemented for existing subscribers over the upcoming months. Existing members will receive an email notification one month prior to the new prices being applied to their accounts.
Previous Price Increase in January 2025
This news follows Netflix’s previous price increase in January 2025. Since then, the company has introduced a number of new features to its platform, including the launch of video podcasts and additional livestreaming content. Netflix also recently unveiled plans to overhaul its mobile app and extend its short-form video feature.
Netflix Withdraws Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery
These recent increases occur as Netflix, last month, withdrew from a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. Warner Bros. Discovery had declared Paramount Skydance’s offer of $31 per share as a “superior proposal” and had given Netflix four business days to counter. Netflix, however, decided not to raise its $82.7 billion all-cash bid for the studio, consequently abandoning the deal.
