Conntour raises $7M from General Catalyst, YC to build AI search engine for security video systems

The Controversy and Innovation in Surveillance Technology

The surveillance technology industry has been drawing attention recently. However, it’s not due to its advancements but because of the ethical dilemmas it presents. The use of Flock’s camera network by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for surveillance purposes and the criticism faced by home camera maker Ring for devising features that allow law enforcement to request homeowners for neighborhood footage have sparked a heated debate on privacy, security, and surveillance rights.

Technology Improvement and Business Opportunities

Despite the controversy, the market continues to thrive. The ongoing enhancement of visual language models has only fueled companies looking for innovative ways to help businesses monitor activities on their premises.

Conntour: A Responsible Player in Surveillance Technology

Conntour, a video surveillance startup, is one such company that stands out in this landscape. Matan Goldner, the co-founder and CEO, emphasizes the importance of ethics in their operations. The company is selective about its clientele, a decision that doesn’t necessarily align with typical startup strategies. However, Goldner asserts that they have the luxury to be picky owing to their large government and listed clients, including Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau.

“Having such large clients allows us to select them and maintain control […] We really control who uses it, what the use case is, and we can cherry-pick what we think is moral and, of course, legal. We use all our judgment and make decisions based on specific clients that are right for us [to work with] because we know how they will use it,” Goldner stated in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch.

Investment and Growth

This unique approach has not only allowed Conntour to be selective but also attracted investors. The startup recently raised a $7 million seed round from General Catalyst, Y Combinator, SV Angel, and Liquid 2 Ventures. The funding cycle was completed astonishingly within 72 hours.

Conntour’s Advanced AI Tools

Conntour’s video platform uses AI models to equip security personnel with the ability to search camera feeds using natural language. This enables the detection of any object, person, or situation in the footage in real time. The platform has a Google-like search engine specifically designed for security video feeds. It can monitor and detect threats based on predefined rules and automatically display alerts.

Conntour’s system provides a high degree of flexibility and usability. For example, a user can command, “Find examples of someone in sneakers passing a bag in the lobby,” and the system will swiftly search all recorded footage or live video feeds to return relevant results.

The AI capability of the platform allows users to ask questions about images and receive answers in text form, accompanied by relevant video feeds. It also helps generate incident reports.

Conntour’s major selling point is its scalability. It is designed to efficiently scale to systems with thousands of camera feeds, a significant advantage over other AI video search services. According to Goldner, the Conntour system can monitor up to 50 camera feeds from a single consumer GPU like Nvidia’s RTX 4090.

The company uses several logical models and systems to achieve this efficiency. The algorithm determines which models and systems to use for each query to require the least amount of computing power possible while still delivering the best results.

Conntour’s system can be deployed entirely on-premises, entirely in the cloud, or a mix of both. It can integrate with most existing security systems or serve as a standalone monitoring platform.

Addressing Challenges

There’s a pervasive issue in the video surveillance industry: the quality of surveillance depends on the quality of the images captured. Poorly lit scenes or low-resolution cameras can hamper the effectiveness of the surveillance system. Conntour mitigates this problem by providing a trust score with its search results, indicating the confidence in the returned results based on the quality of the camera feed.

Looking ahead, Goldner identifies the biggest technical challenge as providing the full level of LLM (Language Model) capability to the system while maintaining efficiency. It’s a delicate balance between offering complete natural language flexibility and efficiency in processing thousands of streams. This is a significant technical obstacle that Conntour is working hard to overcome.

Conntour’s innovative approach to video surveillance technology is a promising development in an industry marred by ethical debates. Its focus on customer selectivity, AI-powered tools, scalability, and quality control illustrates a commitment to providing robust surveillance solutions while addressing privacy concerns.
