Balderton Welcomes Phil Chambers as New Partner, Focused on Early-Stage Investments
Balderton, a leading venture capital firm, has announced the appointment of Phil Chambers as a partner, where he will concentrate on early-stage investments. This strategic addition underscores Balderton’s commitment to nurturing innovation and supporting burgeoning technology enterprises in Europe.
Phil Chambers: A Veteran of the European Technology Ecosystem
Chambers brings with him over two decades of experience as a founder, operator, and angel investor in the European technology landscape, having worked in key tech hubs like London, Hamburg, and Copenhagen. His most recent role was as CEO of Orbex, a Scottish space launch company, where he gained valuable insights into the aerospace sector.
Leadership at Peakon and Workday
Prior to his tenure at Orbex, Chambers co-founded Peakon, a Balderton portfolio company known for its innovative approach to employee engagement. Under his leadership, Peakon achieved rapid international expansion from its Danish origins to markets in the UK, Germany, the US, and the Asia Pacific. This journey culminated in a significant milestone: a $700 million acquisition by Workday in 2021. Following the acquisition, Chambers served as CEO of Workday for two and a half years, where he successfully expanded the company’s global presence and led the company to attain hundreds of millions of dollars in annual recurring revenue (ARR).
A Passion for Technology and Entrepreneurship
Chambers’ passion for technology began in childhood, leading him to study computer science at the University of Manchester. His early career included roles at startups such as Gumtree in the UK and Qype, a local review company in Hamburg, Germany. His experience as CTO at Podio, a work management company acquired by Citrix, was pivotal; he later led the GoToMeeting product line, which inspired him to co-found Peakon and transform the employee listening sector.
An Influential Angel Investor
Beyond his operational career, Chambers has been a prominent angel investor in Europe, backing over 100 startups. This extensive experience has provided him with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by early-stage companies.
A New Chapter at Balderton
At Balderton, Chambers will leverage his rich experience to support founders as they navigate the complexities of starting and scaling their businesses in Europe. Bernard Liautaud, Managing Partner at Balderton, expressed his enthusiasm: “I have had the pleasure of knowing Phil for almost a decade now, first working with him as a board member at Peakon, where I watched him grow the company from virtually nothing to a $700 million acquisition by Workday. We then remained close during his tenure at Workday and his Orbex years. I couldn’t be happier to welcome Phil to the Balderton partnership.”
Chambers also shared his excitement about joining Balderton: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Balderton team: an incredible group of people, working with Europe’s most impressive companies, and a fund at the top of its game.”
