Google Wallet adds support for three more digital passport IDs on Android

Google Wallet Expands Digital Passport Support to More Countries

In a significant update for global travelers, Google Wallet for Android has expanded its support for digital passport IDs. Initially launched in select countries, the feature now includes support for passports from Brazil, Singapore, and Taiwan. This development follows its initial rollout for US passports, with subsequent expansion to the UK last year.

Adding your passport as a digital ID in Google Wallet is a straightforward process. To begin, users need to tap the ‘plus’ floating action button (FAB) and navigate to the ID section. Here, under “ID pass,” users can select their passport.

Steps to Add Your Passport to Google Wallet

The process of adding your passport involves three key steps:

  1. Place your passport on a flat surface.
  2. Open your passport’s front cover, back cover, or photo page.
  3. To scan, ensure that NFC is turned on and remove your phone case.
  4. To find the chip, slowly move the back of your phone around inside your passport’s front cover, back cover, or photo page.

This step-by-step procedure requires users to take a picture of their passport’s info page, scan the security chip embedded in the back cover using the phone’s NFC chip, and send a brief selfie video to verify identity.

Currently, users can add only one ID pass to their Google Account. If needed, the passport can be removed from Google Wallet either via the phone app or online at myaccount.google.com.

With this capability, Google Wallet continues to enhance its functionality, offering a more seamless and secure way for users to manage their identification documents digitally. This feature is especially beneficial for frequent travelers, providing convenience and security in managing travel documents.

The expansion to include Brazil, Singapore, and Taiwan represents a significant step in Google Wallet’s goal to provide comprehensive support for digital IDs worldwide.
