USC Unveils Major AI Initiative with Transformational $200 Million Donation
The University of Southern California (USC) has taken a significant leap forward in the realm of artificial intelligence by launching a groundbreaking AI initiative, supported by a generous $200 million donation. This initiative aims to foster innovation and breakthroughs across various sectors, including health sciences, security, business, and the arts.
Historic Donation Fuels AI Advancement
In a move that underscores the growing importance of AI in academia and industry, the donation—one of the largest in USC’s history—comes from Mark Stevens, an NVIDIA board member and USC trustee, and his wife, Mary. In recognition of their generosity, USC’s School of Advanced Computing will be renamed the USC Mark and Mary Stevens School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence.
Driving Innovation Across Disciplines
USC President Beong-Soo Kim emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating, “As AI becomes more powerful, it opens up tremendous opportunities to improve lives and solve some of our biggest challenges when used correctly.” He further noted that this initiative would allow USC to leverage its interdisciplinary strengths and address real-world challenges effectively.
The initiative is poised to enhance education and research across the university. This includes expanding efforts at the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute, which utilizes AI to analyze brain scans and identify genetic patterns associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, the USC Institute for Creative Technologies will employ AI for military training applications, showcasing the diverse potential of AI technologies.
Leadership and Vision
Yannis Yortsos, dean of USC Viterbi, highlighted the visionary nature of the Stevens’ contribution. “Mark and Mary have always understood the countless opportunities that exist at the intersection of technology and expertise,” he said. This strategic investment comes at a crucial time as the world enters a transformative age of AI, promising breakthroughs and innovation both on the USC campus and globally.
