Shay Shwartz’s early foray into hacking as a teenager was a crucial turning point. After getting arrested at the tender age of 16, he sought to pivot his skills towards defending against the very attacks he once executed. His transformation from hacker to defender wasn’t just a personal journey but a professional evolution that positioned him at the forefront of cybersecurity.
Contributions to Israel’s Defense and Intelligence
Following his initial brush with the law, Shwartz spent nearly a decade in high-level cybersecurity roles. He spearheaded significant projects for Israel’s elite defense and intelligence units, including contributing to the Iron Dome project. These experiences cemented his expertise and deepened his understanding of advanced cybersecurity measures.
Launching Ocean: A New Frontier in Cybersecurity
Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Shwartz took the leap two years ago to launch his own startup. Ocean, an agent messaging security platform, is designed to combat the growing threat of AI-based attacks. Emerging from stealth mode, Ocean has secured $28 million in total funding. The funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from Picture Capital and Cerca Partners, as well as high-profile angel investors such as Wiz co-founder and CEO Assaf Rappaport, and Yevgeny Dibrov and Nadir Izrael, co-founders of Armis.
Addressing AI-Driven Phishing Threats
While established vendors like Proofpoint, Mimecast, and newer entities like Abnormal Security detect standard phishing attacks, Shwartz emphasizes the need for a different approach with AI in play. “AI has just made the whole process automatic, so the scale is much bigger now,” Shwartz told TechCrunch. “I can have LLM go figure out exactly who you are, harvest a large amount of public information, and create highly targeted phishing attacks against you.”
Ocean’s Innovative Approach
Ocean claims its AI can deeply analyze the context of each incoming email to detect fraud and identity theft attempts. The startup is already reviewing billions of emails monthly for clients such as Kayak, Kingston Technology, and Headspace. Shwartz notes that Ocean has developed a small language model designed to quickly analyze emails, understand the sender’s intent, and evaluate it against the user’s specific organizational context.
“It’s like having a guard at every door,” Shwartz said. “This is how we make the inbox a safe and highly hygienic place.”
