ClickHouse triples annual revenue to $250 million, paving the way for an IPO

ClickHouse: Surpassing Milestones and Eyeing a Promising Future

Database provider ClickHouse has surpassed $250 million in annual revenue, tripling its business from the previous year, Yury Izrailevsky, co-founder and president of product and technology, told TechCrunch. Izrailevsky expects sales to reach high nine figures by the end of the year.

Impressive Valuation and Potential IPO

ClickHouse was valued at $15 billion in January following a $400 million Series D funding round led by Dragoneer Investment Group. The latest valuation implies a high multiple of over 60 times annual sales. This remarkable figure underscores the company’s robust growth trajectory and investor confidence.

According to Izrailevsky, the company’s rapid revenue growth and premium valuation are preparing it for an IPO in the next few years. ClickHouse joins a small but growing list of tech startups signaling plans to go public, as the IPO window is expected to be opened wide by SpaceX’s historic debut in June, followed by highly anticipated IPOs from OpenAI and Anthropic later this year.

Strategic Leadership and Acquisitions

Last fall, the startup hired Jimmy Sexton as chief financial officer, who previously led investor relations at Snowflake, one of ClickHouse’s main competitors. Hiring a CFO is often seen as a signal that a company is preparing to enter the public market.

The company has already acquired six startups, including Langfuse, which helps developers track and evaluate the performance of AI agents. Izrailevsky noted that ClickHouse plans to continue its acquisition activity, bringing in “relatively young but very promising technology” startups, typically open source companies, that complement its core product suite.

Historical Roots and Clientele

The technology behind ClickHouse was originally developed at Russian search giant Yandex 17 years ago, but was founded as an independent startup in 2021. ClickHouse has over 4,000 customers including Anthropic, Meta, Capital One, and Decagon. This diverse client base speaks to the versatility and reliability of ClickHouse’s offerings.

The startup’s open-source database is designed to process the massive data sets required by AI agents. ClickHouse generates revenue by selling managed cloud services. Izrailevsky claimed that this commercial offering ultimately costs customers less than self-managing the open source version. It “is something that’s a little counterintuitive, but it’s also given us a big tailwind,” he said.
