Many potential applicants hesitate, believing it’s too early or that they need more traction, thinking that the program targets more advanced companies.

However, it’s important to understand what we’re truly seeking in applicants. Originally, the deadline was May 27, but due to high interest, we’ve extended it to June 8. You still have time to apply, but don’t delay!

For those unfamiliar with this year’s event, Startup Battlefield is part of TechCrunch Disrupt, hosted in San Francisco from October 13-15, culminating in the announcement of the future champion. Past winners include giants such as Cloudflare and Discord, showcasing the potential of participants.

What Makes a Company Stand Out in Startup Battlefield

Startup Battlefield isn’t about rewarding the most successful companies; it’s about identifying the most promising ones.

We search for companies with ideas that are innovative and category-defining, capable of making a major impact in their industry or region. Our key question for each application is: does this change anything? Not gradually, but fundamentally.

Product and disruption: Your product should represent a significant shift in how something operates. We aren’t looking for incremental improvements but for innovations that render existing solutions obsolete.

The founding team: We want to know why you’re tackling this problem and why now. Your story is part of your application. Founders who clearly articulate their beliefs and motivations stand out.

Industrial and geographic diversity: We value diversity and aim to include companies from various regions and industries. If you’re innovating in a less recognized area, this could be your opportunity to shine.

What Doesn’t Disqualify You from Startup Battlefield

Media coverage: While local and industry coverage is beneficial, we’re more interested in companies that haven’t yet had their breakthrough moment. If your product hasn’t been spotlighted yet, apply and show us what you’ve got.

In pre-launch: Having a working MVP is sufficient. You don’t need customers or revenue. Pre-launch companies are welcome.

Having applied previously: Many companies apply multiple times before selection. A past rejection doesn’t predict your future success.

Fundraising status: Companies at any stage, from bootstrapped to pre-seed and seed, are welcome. Series A companies are considered, especially in capital-intensive industries.

Tips for a Strong Startup Battlefield Application

Show that your product works: Demonstrating a functioning MVP is crucial. We want to see your product in action, even if it’s a simple screen recording.

Know your competitive landscape: Claiming no competition is unrealistic. Identify your competitors and clearly articulate why you have an edge over them.

Tell your story: Your founding story is vital. Explain why you started the company and what unique insights you have. This is often a pivotal factor in evaluations.

Avoid over-polishing: While clarity is important, don’t over-polish your application to the point of invisibility. We value authenticity.

Resubmit if necessary: If you’re not ready, don’t worry. You can submit a new application until the extended deadline of June 8.
