If you’ve been waiting for a sign that Apple is ready to rethink what headphones can do, the 2026 supply chain reports might just be it. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a September launch for the upcoming AirPods Pro, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman tracking the broader chip refresh. The most notable rumor isn’t the sound quality. These are infrared cameras nestled in the stems.
The idea seems far-fetched until you realize that a University of Washington team led by a former Apple AirPods engineer has already built a working version this spring. Their VueBuds prototype suggests Apple isn’t chasing a moonshot. It catches up on a research demonstration it helped inspire.
The camera modules should be small enough to retain the current stem design, and some reports suggest Apple could ship the camera-equipped model as the new “AirPods Ultra” rather than just the Pro 4. Here’s what the leaks say, what’s left to speculate, and how it affects your purchasing decision this summer.
What Supply Chain Reports Say in 2026
The first signal came in February, when Kuo, reported by MacRumors, said that the 2026 AirPods Pro would feature a “bigger” hardware upgrade in the form of at least a small infrared camera. April follow-ups from MacRumors and 9to5Mac beefed up the camera angle and added an H3 chip to the rumor mix.
These would not be traditional cameras. Infrared sensors would read environmental data and hand gestures and partner with Apple Intelligence to analyze the user’s environment, suggesting that Apple has moved well beyond pure prototyping.
In May, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that camera-equipped AirPods had reached the final stages of development. His report adds two concrete details: a small LED light on each earbud to signal when the cameras are active, and a link to Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature on the iPhone 15 Pro and later.
Why September Keeps Showing Up on Analyst Calendars
The cadence of AirPods Pro has been unpredictable. The Pro 2 landed in September 2022, received a USB-C overhaul in September 2023, and the Pro 3 just launched in September 2025. A follow-up in 2026 would arrive just a year after the Pro 3, which is why most reports present it as a parallel “AirPods Ultra” tier above the Pro 3 rather than a routine refresh.
Kuo has pointed to fall 2026 as the window for the camera-equipped model, with Apple’s rumored foldable “iPhone Ultra” event as the likely milestone. Gurman separately reported that Apple’s silicon group was working on an H3 chip aimed at lower latency and better audio quality, although his previous reports placed camera-equipped AirPods on a 2027 timeline.
Apple could still delay if camera integration proves trickier than expected, but Kuo’s September timeline is the most concrete signal we have.
What Infrared Headphone Cameras Would Actually Do
It sounds like science fiction, but the technology behind it has advanced in Apple’s line of wearable products. Infrared sensors in the stems would detect hand movements near your face, opening the door to gesture controls without touching the buds.
Researchers at the University of Washington, led by former Apple engineer Maruchi Kim and lead author Shyam Gollakota, have previously demonstrated this concept with modified Sony WF-1000XM3 headphones. Their VueBuds prototype, unveiled in April 2026 and awarded an honorable mention at CHI ’26, embeds grain-of-rice-sized cameras in each stem and transmits low-resolution black-and-white images to a phone, where an AI model on the device answers questions about what the user is looking at.
Practical use cases are still unclear. You can adjust the volume with a hand gesture, accept a call with a pinch, or trigger Siri without speaking. Spatial awareness could also improve head tracking for spatial audio.
The Naming Puzzle: Pro 4 or a Camera-Equipped Variant
Not all leaks agree on the name of these buds. Some sources present the camera-equipped model as an AirPods Pro 4, a complete generational leap. Others suggest an Ultra premium tier above the standard Pro line.
The current AirPods Pro 3 retails for $249. MacRumors outlined two pricing scenarios: If Apple keeps the $249 camera model, it replaces the Pro 3; if it hits around $299 or more, it sits above the Pro 3 as the new tier. This gap supports a separate “Ultra” tier rather than a simple replacement.
The name is important to buyers. If it’s a Pro 4, the Pro 3 is discontinued. If it’s an Ultra, you’ll likely have three Pro-level options on shelves this fall. Either way, the camera model is expected to be the most expensive AirPods Apple has ever shipped.
Upgrades We Are Most Confident About
The H3 chip is widely anticipated, following the H2 in the Pro 3 and AirPods 4, bringing better power efficiency and faster processing on the device. Improved ANC is also likely given competition from Sony and Bose. Battery life should see a slight increase, although camera hardware may reduce these gains.
Lossless audio support continues to appear in analyst notes, although the current AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2 with USB-C, and AirPods 4 already perform lossless when paired with Vision Pro. The rumored Pro 4 is actually intended to expand this capability beyond the Vision Pro pairing requirements.
Should You Buy AirPods Pro 3 Now or Wait?
The AirPods Pro 3 launched at $249 in September 2025. Amazon has kept them at $199 since Memorial Day weekend, a $50 discount that was the record low until early June before Prime Day.
If your current headphones are broken, the Pro 3 remains Apple’s best option. Its ANC, spatial audio, heart rate detection, and ecosystem integration remain top-notch. Waiting three months for unconfirmed features is a gamble if you need buds today.

The AirPods Pro 4 or AirPods Ultra or whatever Apple calls the camera-equipped model, is shaping up to be more than a routine refresh. The history of infrared sensors has too many independent sources to ignore. The September calendar is plausible but not locked in.
What is certain is that Apple is investing in headphones as wearables, not just audio devices. This change accelerated with the H2 chip in 2022 and heart rate detection in 2025; the cameras would push it further. If you’re hesitant, waiting until September won’t cost you much.
