Jinhua Zhao Appointed as Head of MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning
Jinhua Zhao, who holds multiple degrees from MIT including MCP ’04, SM ’04, and PhD ’09, has been appointed as the new head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at MIT, effective July 1. Zhao is also a 1941 Professor of Cities and Transportation at the institute.
Hashim Sarkis, Dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, announced Zhao’s appointment and highlighted his extensive contributions to the field of transportation planning. Zhao is recognized globally for his innovative work in shaping the future of mobility and has been instrumental in bridging the gap between technological advancements and policy implementation.
A Seamless Transition from Research to Policy
Zhao succeeds Professor Christopher Zegras, who served as department head since 2020. Under Zegras’ leadership, DUSP expanded its engagement with global communities and strengthened the link between academic research and practical application. Sarkis expressed gratitude for Zegras’ effective leadership during challenging times.
Reflecting on his journey at MIT, Zhao praised the institute’s interdisciplinary culture and lack of conventional boundaries, which he found intellectually stimulating. “MIT is a small school in the best sense of the word,” Zhao remarked. “Our ‘infinite corridor’ literally connects us to so many disciplines.”
Shaping Global Mobility Systems
Connectivity is central to Zhao’s research, which has had a significant impact on transportation systems worldwide. His work has influenced policy for major transit agencies such as Transport for London, Mass Transit Railway in Hong Kong, and Japan Railways. In the United States, his research has benefited agencies like the MBTA in Boston and the Chicago Transit Authority. Zhao has also developed strategies for the deployment of autonomous vehicles in regions like Singapore and the Middle East.
“Every city I’ve worked with faces the same tension: technology is advancing faster than the institutions designed to govern it,” Zhao noted. “My work has been about bridging that gap.”
At MIT, Zhao founded the MIT Mobility Initiative, which unites researchers and leaders from around the world to discuss pressing issues in mobility and transportation. The initiative’s weekly MIT Mobility Forum has become a global platform, attracting over 200 participants each week. “No single discipline owns transportation,” Zhao stated. “The forum exists to ensure that critical insights are accessible to the people who need them most.”
Innovating at the Intersection of AI and Urban Mobility
Zhao also leads the JTL Urban Mobility Lab, which combines behavioral science with transportation technology to design efficient mobility systems and improve policy. He plays a pivotal role in MIT’s Mens, Manus and Machina initiative, which explores the intersection of AI, work, and human learning. Zhao’s work focuses on designing systems that enhance human capabilities rather than displacing them.
Advancing DUSP’s Global Agenda
Looking ahead, Zhao is committed to ensuring that DUSP’s research reaches those who need it most, including city planners, officials, and engineers. “We know a lot about how cities grow, how people move, and how that will change,” Zhao explained. “The question is whether the people responsible for these changes can access our knowledge when they need it.”
Zhao envisions DUSP actively engaging with various constituencies, from transport companies integrating autonomous vehicles to governments rethinking infrastructure. By doing so, DUSP aims to address global challenges such as aging societies, AI’s impact on jobs, energy crises, and traffic congestion.
