8BitDo Celebrates Nintendo 64’s 30th Anniversary with Retro-Inspired Accessories
8BitDo is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Nintendo 64 with new versions of two of its most popular accessories. It gives the Retro 87 mechanical keyboard and Ultimate 2 wireless controller a translucent blue makeover inspired by the classic console.
The new “Clear Blue” editions were first announced in China. However, both products also ship to the US, where they cost $99.99 and $59.99 respectively.
Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard: A Nostalgic Throwback
The Retro 87 mechanical keyboard leans heavily on Nintendo 64 nostalgia. In addition to its translucent blue shell, it features yellow arrow keys modeled after the N64 controller’s iconic C keys. The A, B and Start buttons adopt the same blue, green and red color scheme as the original gamepad.
Beyond the retro design, the keyboard retains the same functionality as the standard model. These include an aluminum plate, a hot-swappable circuit board, and 8BitDo’s Cloud Gray linear switches. Developed in collaboration with HUANO, these switches offer a tactile experience that appeals to gamers and typists alike. The keyboard supports Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless, and wired connectivity, making it versatile for different user needs. Additionally, it works with Windows and Android and can be customized via the company’s Ultimate Software V2.
The keyboard also comes with two matching Super Buttons, although unlike some previous special editions they are not wireless.
Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller: A Blend of Style and Functionality
The Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller gets a similar treatment. It combines a translucent blue top shell with colored ABXY keys and gray thumbsticks. Additionally, the translucent white base shell resembles some of the Nintendo 64’s most iconic color variants.
Luckily, the cosmetic refresh doesn’t come at the expense of functionality. The controller still features TMR thumbsticks, RGB lighting rings, a six-axis motion sensor, and a polling rate of 1000 Hz. This rate applies when used in wired or wireless 2.4 GHz mode. Additionally, compatibility extends to Windows, Android, SteamOS, and Apple devices, making it a versatile choice for gamers across platforms.
Availability and Pre-Order Information
While 8BitDo regularly releases gaming-themed accessories, this is the first Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller designed for a console rather than a specific title. The Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller N64 Edition is available now. Meanwhile, the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard N64 Edition is scheduled to launch on August 14th.
