Pocket raises $11 million betting on growing demand for AI note-taking devices

Revolutionizing Meeting Notes: Pocket’s AI-Driven Gadget Gains Traction

Unlike AI gadgets like Rabbit or Humane, companies that build gadgets dedicated to recording and transcribing meetings have actually seen some popularity. The market is huge – although a bit limited, as smartphones work well for such tasks when paired with note-taking apps – and startups like Plaud, Mobvoi, Anker, Viaim and Vibe have jumped in to take advantage of it.

Pocket: A Game Changer in Meeting Transcription

In this crowded market, Y Combinator-backed Pocket believes it can win with its design, packaging and price. The company sells a $129 credit card-shaped puck that sticks to the back of your phone and promises unlimited recordings, transcriptions, and to-dos, with no subscription required.

The startup claims to have sold more than 130,000 units since its launch last year, and that momentum has now helped it secure $11 million in funding from Accel, Y Combinator and ElevenLabs CEO and co-founder Mati Staniszewski.

The Unique Proposition of Pocket

The main idea of Pocket isn’t new: You stick the puck on the back of your phone, turn on recording during a meeting, and it will record and transcribe your conversations.

Users can then ask the associated phone app to generate meeting summaries, ask an AI assistant questions about the meetings, create mind maps, and transform the text into different templates.

While basic transcription is free with Puck, the company sells a $200 per year plan to unlock unlimited AI summaries, AI assistant queries, daily highlights, and attachments.

Real-world Application and User Benefits

“You can record on the go, offline and in the field, which is exactly how lawyers, salespeople, doctors, real estate agents, construction workers and students use Pocket today,” said Accel Partner Cecilia Wang. “Not only are people present rather than shifting to take notes, but more information and ideas are also being captured than ever before that otherwise would have been lost. Over time, this accumulation of information is truly valuable: a central place where your ideas, conversations and thoughts live, rather than scattered and lost,” Wang said.

The Visionaries Behind Pocket

Pocket was founded by Akshay Narisetti, a founding member of rival note-taking startup Omi; and Gabriel Dymowski, who previously founded a blockchain-based document management startup.

“We thought every meeting note-taker was designed for online conversations, but nothing was tailored for real-world discussions. AI really needs a lot of context to work best for us, and a lot of that context exists offline,” Narisetti told TechCrunch.

Enterprise Solutions and Integrations

For its enterprise customers, Pocket offers custom workflow management, webhooks support, and integration with apps such as Google Calendar, OneDrive, Google Drive, Obsidian, Claude, and Cursor. Additionally, there is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server to connect its AI assistant to other databases.

Like other meeting note-takers, Pocket wants to help people automate tasks like writing emails, updating CRMs, and creating meeting-based action items. The company relies on rapid software delivery to enable these integrations.

Facing Competition in a Growing Market

Devices like Pocket undoubtedly face competition from software players like Granola, Zoom, Fireflies, Otter, and Read AI. However, device-focused companies like Plaud, which is on track to generate $100 million in annual revenue from software sales, are also building the company’s capabilities as well as desktop applications for digital meetings.
