Exploring the Panasonic Lumix S9: A Perfect Blend of Quality and Convenience
I’m someone who likes the idea of carrying a dedicated camera with me wherever I go, hoping to capture better quality photos than I can manage with my iPhone 15 Pro. I already have an OM System OM-D E-M10 MKIV, but I took it exactly once on vacation, where I used it exactly one day.
While it’s quite small (at least compared to many full-frame alternatives), I found it too bulky to fit in a shoulder bag, especially when aftermarket lenses were added to the mix.
With this in mind, I used a Fujifilm Instax mini camera on my recent trip to Europe. Not only was it easier to fit in my bag, but it also got me thinking carefully about compositions, and I love that I now have physical printed photos to admire.
However, I can still agree that digital is more convenient, which is why I loved the Panasonic Lumix S9, and now it’s 42% off before Prime Day, it’s the perfect time to snag it.
The Versatile Features of the Panasonic Lumix S9
Now, as I just mentioned, the Lumix S9 is definitely aimed more at videographers, due to its support for open-door 6K video, which benefits from the full height and width of the 3:2, 24.2 MP full-frame sensor. The Lumix S9 also has one of the best image stabilization systems when recording video that we’ve come across.
Unfortunately this ability would be lost on me, as a videographer I am not. I’m much more interested in the S9’s image-capturing credentials, and based on our review of the Panasonic Lumix S9, I’m in for a treat if I hit the “Buy Now” button.
Outstanding Image Quality and Dynamic Range
Indeed, the 24.2 MP sensor – which is essentially the same as the one in the Lumix S5 II – takes superb still images, with superb noise control and dynamic range, meaning it can capture detail in darker areas.
Additionally, its larger sensor is better suited to low-light photography than the micro four thirds on my E-M10 Mark IV, although the latter still takes nice images.
Innovative Real-Time LUTs Feature
The S9 also uses real-time LUTs (lookup tables) which, while recommended for videos, allow you to use a range of color profiles to enhance images, although I’m a little intimidated by the fact that Panasonic doesn’t make this the simplest option in its photography menu system. I’m still excited to try this feature for still images.

Aesthetic and Functional Design
And then there’s what the camera itself looks like. I’m quite in love with the S9’s aesthetic: it’s compact and minimal, two qualities I love. However, one of the biggest complaints we had during our review is the fact that there is no viewfinder. On paper, it won’t be a big deal for me if I don’t use the camera all the time, but clearly I have to point it out. The screen extends and tilts though, which will help when composing photos.
Flexibility with the L-Mount Alliance
Another benefit of the S9 is based on membership in Panasonic’s L-Mount Alliance, which allows you to use any full-frame L-mount lens from other members, like Leica and Sigma – although this particular offering is included with an 18-40mm kit lens. If you want to know more, our friends at Digital Camera World have put together a guide to the best lenses for the Lumix S9 to help you on your way.
Conclusion: A Worthwhile Investment
Overall, I think this is a great camera, although I balked at the suggested price of AU$3,299, which is why I hesitated to buy it for so long. Fortunately, the 42% reduction fixes this problem to a large extent. Less than two thousand dollars for a high-performance full-frame shooter? Count on me.
