Meta disables Instagram feature that lets users create AI deepfakes of public accounts

Meta Backtracks on Controversial AI Image Generation Feature

Following significant backlash, Meta is disabling the feature announced this week that allows users to generate AI images based on the content of public Instagram accounts simply by tagging them. The feature, as originally configured, meant that content from any public Instagram account could be used in AI creations without the account owner’s permission.

Meta’s Original Intent and Immediate Backlash

“Earlier this week, we announced that one way for people to generate images in Meta AI is to @-mention public Instagram accounts they want to reference,” Meta said in an update to a blog post about its new Muse Image AI template. “Our intention was to provide a useful creative tool and allow users to control whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We heard feedback that this feature had not served its purpose and is therefore no longer available.”

Concerns Over Privacy and Exploitation

Meta allowed you to opt out by going through the settings before disabling the feature entirely, but the feature still drew major criticism.

“Not only does this obviously erode our rights to our own image… but it is an obvious tool for #sextortion and other scammers!” Haley McNamara, executive director and chief strategy officer of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, said earlier Friday. “Pursuing a high-risk design and then placing the responsibility on individuals to jump through hoops to opt out is unacceptable.”

The Implications for User Privacy

The swift response from Meta highlights the ongoing tension between innovation and privacy in the digital age. While the integration of AI technologies offers new creative possibilities, it also underscores the necessity for tech companies to prioritize user consent and data protection. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for transparency and ethical considerations in tech development.
