Waze Introduces AI-Powered Features for Enhanced Navigation Experience
Navigation app Waze is rolling out an update to its iPhone and Android app to introduce three new AI-powered features. This update aims to enhance user experience by making navigation more personalized and interactive.
Personalized Routing
The first feature leverages your journey history to understand your routing preferences. Waze will now offer personalized navigation options that are tailored to your driving habits and preferences. The company states that this personalized routing will be provided before standard options are displayed.
Everyone has unique navigation preferences, and Waze is set to accommodate them. If you prefer highways over local streets with multiple stops, Waze will suggest those routes first. This is made possible through the app’s hyperlocal understanding of a city’s traffic patterns, ensuring a more customized driving experience.
Gemini-Powered Conversational Assistance
Sometimes, you know what you need but not exactly where to go. Waze introduces Gemini-powered chat to help you find suitable destinations. Before navigating, you can use the voice search feature to ask questions like “Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now,” “Find me parking close to Grand Mall,” or “Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices.” Waze will respond with a list of options, allowing you to quickly start navigating using your voice.
Conversational Reporting for Permanent Changes
Waze expands its conversational reporting to include permanent changes such as road closures or closed businesses. Simply say, “The road is closed here,” and Waze will send these details to local map editors. These editors verify the suggestion and update the map accordingly, ensuring that the app remains up-to-date with real-world changes.
Less Chatty Mode for Uninterrupted Driving
For those who prefer fewer interruptions, Waze offers a “less chatty” mode. This feature minimizes voice prompts, allowing drivers to focus on music or podcasts. Critical reminders about hazards, turns, and lane changes will still be provided, but less frequently, so users can concentrate on their audio without missing essential navigation cues.
AI-Powered Motorcycle Navigation
Waze is beginning the rollout of AI-powered motorcycle navigation. Recognizing that motorcycles need different routes than cars, this new mode incorporates two-wheeler shortcuts and restrictions. It helps riders find the best route and get an accurate ETA. The mode also highlights hazards that are particularly tricky for riders, such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges.
Currently, this feature is not rolling out in the US. It is initially being limited to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines.
