ServiceNow bets $40 million on Indian banking software specialist to expand its financial services strategy

ServiceNow’s Strategic Investment in BusinessNext: A New Era for Financial Services

ServiceNow, the US enterprise software maker known for automating workflows such as IT service management and HR operations, is betting on an Indian banking software specialist to deepen its presence in global financial services.

In a significant move that underscores its commitment to expanding its footprint in the financial services sector, ServiceNow has invested $40 million in BusinessNext. This investment values the 24-year-old Indian company at $700 million, giving ServiceNow a roughly 5% stake. The partnership opens up BusinessNext to ServiceNow’s extensive global sales network as both companies aim to innovate in AI for financial services.

BusinessNext’s Expanding Global Profile

ServiceNow’s investment highlights BusinessNext’s rising prominence beyond its home base in India. The profitable Noida-based company reported around $32 million in revenue in its last financial year and serves over 70 banks across India, South East Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. Notable clients include the Reserve Bank of India, the central bank, as well as major public and private sector lenders like State Bank of India and HDFC Bank.

With approximately half of its revenue originating from markets outside India, BusinessNext anticipates international markets to significantly drive its future growth, according to its founder and CEO Nishant Singh.

Strategic Partnership Over Financial Investment

Choosing ServiceNow over potential financial investors, BusinessNext aims to accelerate its expansion by leveraging the US software group’s global reach. Singh revealed that this partnership would enable BusinessNext to “borrow” ServiceNow’s sales infrastructure in regions where their presence is limited, describing it as a strategic partnership strengthened by funding.

BusinessNext’s software focuses on customer-facing banking workflows, while ServiceNow excels at workflow automation and back-office systems. Together, they plan to offer a comprehensive suite to financial institutions.

AI-Driven Banking: The Future

“The Indian financial services industry is at an inflection point: institutions are moving from digital experimentation to large-scale AI-enabled operations,” said Kulmeet Bawa, ServiceNow Group Vice President and Managing Director, India and SAARC. He noted that the partnership merges ServiceNow’s enterprise workflow platform with BusinessNext’s banking expertise.

Founded in 2002 and rebranded as BusinessNext in 2022, the company has developed an “autonomous banking” platform, incorporating AI agents to automate banking workflows while ensuring sensitive customer data remains secure on private AI infrastructure to comply with regulatory and privacy mandates.

Investment and Market Dynamics

With over 1,300 employees, BusinessNext was valued at $181 million in 2021, as per Tracxn, a private market intelligence platform. The company has raised over $60 million in external funding, with Avataar Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, and Ascent Capital among its investors.

This deal comes at a time when established enterprise software companies face scrutiny from customers questioning the value of traditional SaaS tools amidst the rise of AI-native alternatives. For ServiceNow, this investment enhances its position in the banking industry by partnering with a company focused on AI-driven banking software, while simultaneously expanding its enterprise software portfolio through strategic acquisitions, investments, and partnerships.
