General Motors’ Commitment to Phasing Out CarPlay in Future EVs Remains Unchanged
Recent reports claiming that General Motors (GM) is reversing its decision to eliminate CarPlay in its upcoming electric vehicles (EVs) have proven to be inaccurate. Despite the swirling rumors, GM maintains its stance on phasing out CarPlay in favor of its proprietary infotainment system for its future EV lineup.
According to Joanna Stern, host of the YouTube channel New Things, a GM spokesperson clarified that the company’s new software interface, which displays CarPlay or Android Auto alongside its native system, is specific to the gas-powered versions of the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models. This confirmation aligns with GM’s prior statements that CarPlay and Android Auto would remain available in its new gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future, indicating no shift in its strategic direction.
An interesting exception to GM’s EV strategy is the 2027 Cadillac LYRIQ, which continues to support CarPlay and Android Auto. However, it remains uncertain whether the LYRIQ will be the final exception or if GM will continue to offer phone mirroring systems in future EVs. Despite this, GM is adamant about its long-term vision of removing CarPlay from its EV lineup.
GM’s commitment to transitioning away from CarPlay signifies a broader effort to develop and promote its own in-car experiences, which it believes will better serve the evolving needs of EV consumers.
