Google Messages rolls out new long-press menu with partial copying [Updated]

Google Messages Introduces a New Long-Press Menu for Improved Usability

After initial testing began earlier this year, Google Messages is now widely deploying a new long-press menu within conversations. This enhancement is designed to streamline user interactions, offering a more intuitive and efficient way to access frequently used actions.

Official Rollout Announcement

Update 10/1: Google recently announced the official launch of the redesigned long-press menu for Google Messages. This update is set to enhance user experience by providing a more streamlined interface for managing conversations.

Features and Enhancements

The update introduces a tap-activated menu that prominently displays commonly used actions, making them easily accessible. It includes full support for both light and dark themes, ensuring compatibility with user preferences. Additionally, the menu is optimized for landscape mode, allowing for seamless navigation on wider screens.

Highly Requested Features

One of the standout additions in this update is the ability to copy only a portion of a text message, a feature that has been highly requested by users. To utilize this function:

  1. Long press any message to bring up the new action menu.
  2. Long press again directly on the text within that message.
  3. Drag the selection handles to highlight the exact part of the message you want to select.
  4. A second dialogue box will appear with options to Copy, Translate, or Select All.

Additional Functionalities

Previously, the top toolbar housed various actions, but now, upon long-pressing a chat message or image, a floating menu appears. This menu includes options such as Remix (photos), Reply, Forward, Copy (text), Star, Delete, Select more, Info, and Save (photos). Each action is paired with an icon for quick identification.

If the newest message in a thread is selected, Google applies a bouncy animation and haptic feedback, enhancing the interactive experience. The background layer is blurred while the menu is active, maintaining focus on the menu options. The row of emoji and “Create” Photomoji shortcuts remains unchanged.

As of now, the updated Google Messages long-press menu is being rolled out widely with the stable version 20260910_03_RC02. There’s a server-side component involved, so users are advised to force stop the app from the App info menu if the update isn’t live yet.
