Amazon acquires Rivr, maker of stair-climbing delivery robot

Amazon Acquires Autonomous Robotics Startup Rivr

Amazon, the world’s leading e-commerce platform, has acquired Rivr, a Zurich-based startup that specializes in autonomous robotics. Rivr is renowned for its unique stair-climbing delivery robot, which has been likened to a “dog on roller skates”. This strategic acquisition signals Amazon’s growing interest in advancing its home delivery services. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Accelerating the Vision of General Physical AI

In a LinkedIn post, Rivr’s co-founder and CEO, Marko Bjelonic, shared that this acquisition will significantly “accelerate our vision of building general physical AI through home delivery, bringing robotics and AI closer to real-world deployment at scale.” In simpler terms, with Amazon’s vast resources, Rivr’s state-of-the-art robots will soon be able to reach more doorsteps more efficiently.

Rivr’s Journey and Future Prospects

In 2025, Rivr initiated a pilot program in Austin, Texas, in collaboration with Veho, a package delivery company. Bjelonic expressed that the partnership with Veho aimed to garner insights and develop operations to reach a goal of 100 operational robots by 2026. However, with this new development, it remains unclear whether this goal will be achieved.

Amazon had shown interest in Rivr’s innovative technology well before this acquisition. The Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions invested in Rivr in a $22.2 million seed round that closed in 2024, according to PitchBook. The startup, which had raised a total of $25 million, was last valued at $100 million. This acquisition is sure to accelerate Rivr’s growth and reinforce Amazon’s commitment to advancing delivery efficiency.

Looking Ahead

While awaiting further comments from Rivr, this acquisition is a clear indication of the future direction of e-commerce home delivery services. Amazon’s investment in Rivr’s cutting-edge robotics technology is set to revolutionize the way packages are delivered, making the process faster, more efficient, and highly automated. This will undoubtedly improve the overall customer experience.

As the world of e-commerce continues to evolve, such strategic acquisitions and technological advancements will play a crucial role in shaping the future of home delivery services. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
