In a surprising turn of events, Amazon, the global e-commerce behemoth, is reportedly making a re-entry into the smartphone market. According to unnamed sources in a report by Reuters, the company is developing a new smartphone, christened “Transformer” – more than 11 years after its initial, failed smartphone venture, the Fire Phone.
An Amazon Centric Device
The Transformer is being developed by Amazon’s Devices and Services division. As per the reports, the device will boast custom features that would simplify the use of Amazon’s suite of apps. This includes popular services such as Amazon Shopping, Prime Video, and Prime Music.
Alexa Takes Center Stage
Adding a unique selling point, the smartphone will also support Alexa, Amazon’s smart home assistant. Amazon has been heavily investing in Alexa, enhancing it with AI features and expanding its compatibility with most of the company’s devices. The Transformer smartphone is being seen as an avenue to promote Amazon’s AI products among its customers.
ZeroOne: The Team Behind ‘Transformer’
The task of developing the smartphone has been assigned to a relatively new unit within the Devices division, known as ZeroOne. The team is led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive who was instrumental in the creation of the Xbox.
Amazon’s Investment in AI
The news of the Transformer comes at a time when Amazon is heavily investing in AI. The company recently invested $50 billion in OpenAI and has planned a whopping $200 billion in capital spending for its AI, chip, and robotics initiatives in 2026.
A Revamped Alexa
In February, Amazon launched Alexa+, an upgraded version of its smart home assistant. The company spent more than a year revamping Alexa with generative AI features. Alexa+ retains its smart home capabilities and can perform tasks such as planning a trip route, updating a shared calendar, finding and saving recipes, making movie recommendations, assisting with homework, exploring a topic, and more.
Amazon’s Silence
Despite the circulating reports, Amazon has chosen to stay silent on the matter, declining to comment when approached.
Amazon’s venture into the smartphone market with Transformer is eagerly anticipated. With a focus on AI and smart home capabilities, it could potentially change the way we interact with our smartphones. However, with the company’s silence, we can only wait and watch how the Transformer unfolds.
Upcoming Techcrunch event is scheduled to take place in San Francisco, California from October 13-15, 2026, where more details about the Transformer might be revealed.
