Share

There was a time when you would find Touch ID on every Apple device, but to find it on the latest devices is something rare. Although, you would find it on the latest devices like the 2020 iPhone SE and the iPad Air 4. If you have any of these devices and need help with setting up Touch ID, then here is how to set up Touch ID and your new iPhone or iPad:

Understanding your options

You can start with your new iPad or iPhone that uses Touch ID in different ways.

  • When you set up as “new” and start everything from the beginning. This is for people who’ve never used a smartphone or online services before.
  • You can restore data from your older device, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch backup. Also, you can use iCloud or USB with iTunes. This is for people who’ve had a previous iOS device and are upgrading to a new one.
  • Another way is to import from Android, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone. With the app from Apple in Google Play you can easily transfer your data from any old device. This is for people switching to iPhone or iPad.

How to set up Touch ID on iPad or iPhone?

For setting up your device regardless of whether it is new, or you are restoring from backup, or changing your device, you can follow the below steps:

  1. Touch slide to set up and, as it says, slide your finger across the screen.
  2. Choose your desired language. Although, it will automatically pick the correct language if you buy it in your home country.
  3. Further, select your country or region. Similarly, it will automatically pick the correct location if you live where you bought the device.
  4. After choosing a Wi-Fi network, enter its password, or choose Use Cellular instead for an iPhone or iPad with data.
  5. Wait for your iPhone or iPad to activate. It can take a few minutes.
  6. Choose whether or not you want to enable Location Services. You don’t need to worry about not being able to change the settings, you can always change it, but keep in mind you’ll need to enable at least some location services to use apps like Maps.
  7. Set up your Passcode and Touch ID. You can skip this step by selecting Set Up Touch ID Later but security is important.

Restore or transfer your data from an old smartphone or tablet

When you start the set up Touch ID process, you get the option to set up your iPhone or iPad as a new device, restore from a previous device’s iCloud or iTunes backup, or move over your data from Android. To restore or transfer the data from an old iPhone, iPad, Android device, Windows Phone or Surface, or BlackBerry, here is what you can do:

Transfer data to new iPhone or iPad: Using Automatic Setup with your iPhone

  1. Firstly, select your desired language on your new iPhone or iPad with your new and current devices nearby.
  2. Tap Continue on your iPhone or iPad on the popup box which asks you to set up your new iPhone or iPad with your Apple ID.
  3. Scan the image that appears on your new iPhone or iPad with your current iPhone or iPad.
  4. Enter your current iPhone or iPad’s passcode on your new iPhone or iPad.
  5. Set up Touch ID on your new iPhone.
  6. Choose whether or not to restore your new iPhone or iPad from your most recent compatible backup.
  7. Choose to restore your new device from an iCloud or iTunes backup, set up as a new iPhone or iPad, or transfer data from an Android device.
  8. Agree to the terms and conditions.
  9. Tap Continue under Express Settings to use the settings for Siri, Find My iPhone, Location, and usage analytics that were transferred over from your current iPhone and iPad.
  10. Complete the setup process for your new iPhone or iPad.

Another option you have is to start as new. You can set up your device as a new iPhone, rather than restoring from a backup.

How to set up your Touch ID supported iPad or iPhone as new?

If this is your first iOS device and you don’t need to restore any data, here is what you need to do. Firstly, link your device to your iCloud account. Here are the options for this:

  1. Sign in with an existing iCloud Apple ID — simply enter your username (typically your email address) and password.
  2. If you want to have a different ID for iCloud and iTunes, tap Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes.
  3. You can also create a new, free Apple ID.
  4. Or you can skip the step for now and tap Skip This Step. You can always go back and create one or sign in from the Settings app at any time.
  5. Tap to agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions.
  6. Confirm that you agree one more time.
  7. Set up Apple Pay, Apple’s Touch ID-based payment option, if it’s available in your area.
  8. For storing and syncing your passwords on all your device set up iCloud Keychain.
  9. Set up Siri, Apple’s voice-activated assistant.
  10. Also set up “Hey Siri,”, to automatically trigger Siri with the catchphrase.
  11. Tap to send Diagnostic information to Apple when apps crash or other issues arise. If you’d rather not, just tap Don’t Send.
  12. For extra visual accessibility turn on Display Zoom for a larger interface.

And with that, you’re done with the initial setup process for iPad and iPhone with Touch ID!

Conclusion- Set up Touch ID

Although you won’t simply find Touch ID on the latest versions of iOS devices, you will find it on the latest 2020 iPhone SE and the iPad Air 4. To set up your new device you have several options, you can set it up as a new device or restore your data from the previous device. When you set up your device and connect it with your Apple ID, you can restore your backup from iCloud and Keychain easily. But if you are a new user of the iOS device, you can set up as a new device, create a new Apple ID and enjoy all the cool features of your iOS device.
