Finally, Apple announced the best flagship tablet, iPad Pro, with upgraded chips and cameras. Therefore, continue reading this iPad Pro 2022 review to know more. Whenever Apple launches its iPad Pro, it happens to be one of the best tablets in the tablet category. Also, this time around in 2022, the new iPad Pro 2022, which comes with an M2 chip and upgraded cameras, is one of the top-of-the tablets in the market. It offers the best OLED display experience with faster processing power than the MacBook. The iPad Pro 2022 offers new iPadOS 16 capabilities like Stage Manager & Apple Pencil Hover, which offers a great experience on this tablet. However, if you’re new to iPads or have an older model, the iPad Pro 2022 is an obvious recommendation.
Nevertheless, talking about upgrades over the last-generation iPad Pro, only the integration of the M2 chip is the major upgrade the iPad Pro 2022 is getting this time around. However, the new Apple iPad Pro 2022 offers the best Apple Pencil Hover experience. That being said, it’s unnecessary to upgrade to iPad Pro 2022 from the last-gen iPad Pro 2021 unless you need a performance boost.
Apple launched two variants of the iPad Pro 2022 on 26th October; Wi-Fi Only & another is Cellular+WiFi. Also, there are two different variants considering the display size; an entry-level 11-inch Apple iPad Pro, which costs $799(£899) & a 12.9-inch variant, which costs $1,099 (£1,249). These variants support WiFi only.
However, if you want Cellular+WiFi, they cost a bit higher than the WiFi-only models. Also, it offers 5G cellular connectivity. The 11-inch Apple iPad Pro starts at $999(£899) & the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro 2022 starts at 1,299(£1,429). Also, there are some price differences considering what storage option you choose. Both Apple iPad Pro 2022 variants offer up to 1TB of storage & 16GB of RAM. You can order your Apple iPad Pro 2022 right away from Apple Online Store.
Talking about design in the Apple iPad Pro 2022 review, at first glance, it resembles the last-gen Apple iPad Pro 2021 & Apple iPad Pro 2020. There’s no significant design change whatsoever in the new Apple iPad Pro 2022.
It offers the same aluminum chassis with thin bezels and sleek-looking thickness. Since its chassis is made of aluminum, it’s as robust and durable as the old gen Apple iPad Pros.
Talking about colors, there are only two colors available; Space Grey & Silver. It’s not a piece of great news for iPad enthusiasts as the new Apple iPad 2022 comes with various numbers of vivid colors.
Coming to weight and dimensions, the new Apple iPad Pro 2022 holds the exact measurement of the last-gen iPad Pro 2021, which is 11.04 x 8.46 x 0.25 inches and weighs 1.5 pounds. Comparing this weight with some of the flagships laptops like Dell XPS 13, it’s a bit heavier.
Talking about the comfort of handling, it is more comfortable to hold the Apple iPad Pro 2022 without the keyboard attachment for a longer period of time. Seeing it from the design element Apple hasn’t made any significant changes in the looks department. All the ports and buttons appear like the last gen Apple iPad Pro 2021. However, When holding the iPad vertically like a sheet of paper, there’s a button along the top right edge for locking the screen and utilizing Touch ID, two buttons on the right side to raise or reduce the volume, and a single Thunderbolt 4/USB-C connector on the bottom edge.
As we mentioned earlier, Apple offers two display options in iPad Pro 2022; one in 11-inch & second in 12.9-inch. It offers a Retina mini-LED XDR display with a resolution of 2,732 x 2,048 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. In our opinion, that’s the best ever display you can ever get on your tablet to watch your favorite Netflix shows & YouTube videos. If you’re a graphic designer or content maker, then you should definitely go for the 12.9-inch variant of iPad Pro 2022.
It also offers XDR technology integrated into the display. Therefore, watching your favorite Sci-Fi shows with HDR enabled is a whole different experience. It also offers a DCI-P3 wide color gamut, making the colors on the display pop bright and vivid.
Regarding brightness, Apple claims 1000 nits of Full-Screen brightness with up to 1600 nits of peak brightness in HDR content. Also, for its 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, the new iPad Pro’s XDR screen utilizes local dimming zones.
Coming to the Audio, the new Apple iPad Pro 2022 offers the same Four Stereo speakers setup as the last-gen iPad Pro 2021. It offers an okay bass-rich audio experience.
Different functions are attributed to the Volume buttons. This is a brand-new function in iPadOS 16. For Fixed Position Volume Controls, there is an option under Settings > Sounds to lock them to the “normal” position. There is no longer a fixed position volume control toggle on the M2 iPad Pro 2022.
The most significant change that the display of iPad Pro 2022 offers is, of course, Apple Pencil functionality. The second-generation Apple pencil is still supported, which means it can connect magnetically to the iPad’s edge. Also, you don’t have to worry about the charging of the Apple pencil as it gets charged through the magnet on the side of the tablet. This fantastic design is slowly but steadily making its way down to non-Pro iPads like the Air series.
The only significant change in the new iPad Pro 2022, which makes it a great deal to upgrade from the last-gen iPad Pro 2021, is the integration of the new & powerful M2 chip. This chip comes with an eight-core CPU, four high-speed performance cores & four energy-efficient cores. The Apple iPad Pro 2022 offers 8GB of RAM in the 128GB, 256GB, plus 512GB models. Also, 16GB of RAM in the 1TB and 2TB models. And there’s a 10-core GPU that can access all of that memory as if it were its own, with a memory bandwidth of 100GB/s. Apple hasn’t done any compromise in terms of performance in this tablet as it delivers the sheer power of a Macbook.
Obviously, with this much performance & graphics power, you can throw any latest AAA title games like Genshin Impact or Call of duty; it can efficiently run all the games at high graphics with high frame rates.
Also, you can run Adobe Premier or any other video editing software with ease, and it will process your video or image as fast as possible. Also, the new M2 chip is quicker than the last-gen M1 chip, which will result in faster video processing.
Talking about the cellular network, the Apple iPad Pro 2022 supports 5G connectivity. Therefore, you can enjoy high-speed networks with higher download & upload speeds. However, depending on where you live and signal strength, 5G performance will vary.
Another significant change we will discuss in this iPad Pro 2022 review is the new Software. The new iPad Pro 2022 comes with iPadOS 16.1, the latest OS for iPads introduced by Apple. With this new OS, Apple introduced some new software-related features like the Stage manager and many other Apple pencil & detachable keyboard features.
Talking about the Stage manager is Apple’s most significant change in its new iPad OS. However, it is not activated by default, so you will have to activate it from the settings.
Stage Manager is nothing but a tiny visual change in multitasking to make it look closer to macOS’s windowed multitasking to iPadOS, where apps aren’t as restricted in position and size as they are in Split View and Slide Over; multitasking alternatives that iPadOS previously employed. You can overlap & resize Apps easily – but only to specific sizes based on an invisible snapping grid. In our opinion, it’s nice to have a Macbookish experience in tablet form. However, its buggy sometimes forces stop itself & also causes unexpected effects in the apps. So it’s better to turn it off for the time being until Apple fixes it entirely.
Coming to the Camera section, the new iPad Pro 2022’s cameras are identical to those of the previous generation. Depending on your expectations, this might be both a plus and a negative. However, both front and rear cameras were good enough to click good-quality images & videos on the last-gen iPad Pro 2021. Therefore, the cameras remain unchanged by Apple in this generation this time.
The new Apple iPad Pro 2022 comes with 12MP wide-angle camera and a 10MP ultra-wide camera on the rear. Also, a LiDAR sensor for rapid auto-focus and 3D scanning in various apps. Unlike other iPhones, the rear camera can record 4K 60fps video. However, it doesn’t support Dolby Vision HDR.
The front-facing camera is 12MP with an ultra-wide lens for Apple’s Center Stage feature. The Center Stage feature is very useful when attending video meetings. The camera crops into a piece of its overall ultra-wide vision to focus on you. If you move, the camera will follow you as long as you remain inside the ultra-field broad vision. It’s an innovative and handy function that adapts automatically if there are many people in view. The front camera is excellent for video conversations, especially compared to other laptop cameras, but the configuration does not seem as ‘pro’ as the iPhone Pro versions.
Coming to the battery life in the iPad Pro 2022 review, Apple claims the battery life of the new iPad Pro 2022 for up to 10 hours, which includes day-to-day tasking, watching videos & surfing the web.
When utilizing the provided 20W charger, charging times are reasonable. In our tests, charging the iPad Pro to 10% took 15 minutes, while charging to 20% took 30 minutes. This is comparable to the charging times on the last-gen iPad Pro 2021.
Concluding the Apple iPad Pro 2022 review, it’s a power pack tablet with a huge colourful display that delivers best-in-class performance and crisp, vivid picture quality. However, it is merely a minor improvement over its predecessor.
Therefore, we don’t recommend you upgrade to the new iPad Pro 2022 if you already own the last-gen iPad Pro 2021 unless and until you really need a performance boost.
