Apple Introduces Age Verification Features for App Downloads
In response to the rise in new age verification requirements from various regions across the globe, tech giant Apple has unveiled further details about its age verification tools. These tools are aimed at aiding developers in fulfilling their age assurance obligations, in line with upcoming U.S. and other regional laws, including those in Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Utah, and Louisiana.
Enhanced Age Verification Measures
In a significant update, Apple has implemented stricter controls on app downloads in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore. Users in these regions will no longer be able to download apps rated 18+ unless their age has been verified through “reasonable methods”. The App Store can automatically confirm this information.
However, Apple clearly states that developers might still have to independently confirm that their users are adults. To assist developers with this task, Apple offers the Stated Age Range API, which was introduced last year. This API allows app developers to request information about users’ age range.
Updates for New Apple Account Users
For newly registered Apple Account users in Utah starting from May 6, and in Louisiana from July 1, Apple will share age categories with the developer’s app upon request. This sharing will be facilitated via the Declared Age Range API.
New Signals through Declared Age Range API
Apple also offers “new signals” to developers via the Declared Age Range API. These signals include whether age-related regulatory requirements apply to the user and whether the user is required to share their age range. The API will also inform developers if they need to obtain consent from a parent or guardian for crucial app updates for a child.
These measures from Apple highlight the company’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all its users, particularly minors, by enforcing age verification requirements for app downloads. By providing developers with robust tools for age verification, Apple is promoting responsible app distribution and consumption.
