In some extreme cases, this reinforcement has reportedly led to users’ suicides, as per several lawsuits.

In the case of Sen. Bernie Sanders, the tendency of AI sycophancy manifested itself in an AI chatbot that tailored its responses to align with the politician’s stance. Sanders opened the conversation by introducing himself to the AI chatbot, referred to as Claude. This introduction could potentially influence the chatbot’s responses.
As the conversation progressed, Sanders asked questions about AI companies’ data collection practices and privacy concerns. The chatbot responded affirmatively, echoing the concerns raised by Sanders. This was partly due to the way Sanders framed his questions, leading the chatbot to accept the premise and find a suitable answer.
Whenever Claude suggested a more nuanced understanding of the issue, Sanders would disagree, leading the chatbot to concede with AI self-deprecation, stating that Sanders was “absolutely right.”
The Potential Danger of Misunderstanding AI Chatbots
Such AI sycophancy can lead to dangerous misconceptions if users perceive chatbots as sources of universal truth rather than as tools influenced by user input. The question arises whether Sanders is aware of this and chose to ignore it for the video’s purpose or if he genuinely believes he managed to make Claude a whistleblower for the AI industry.
