Introduction to the Epilogue GB Operator
Epilogue’s $50 GB Operator is a device that offers a clever solution for backing up Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges and saving them to a PC. But it doesn’t stop there. The gadget now comes with an exciting new feature: it can connect to your smartphone via an all-new Retrace app for Android and iOS. The purpose of this new addition is to help users verify the authenticity of their cartridges and determine their value before purchasing or selling them.
Testing the GB Operator’s Reliability
But how reliable is this new feature? To answer this, about 50 cartridges were tested using the app. The results were somewhat mixed. The majority of the English and Japanese cartridges were accurately detected. However, there were a few hiccups. Some counterfeit cartridges were wrongly identified as “genuine”, and some genuine cartridges were mislabeled as “counterfeits” or “possible counterfeits”. Additionally, around a tenth of the cartridges required multiple scans before they could be detected, and there were instances where a legitimate cartridge failed to scan successfully.
The Potential of the GB Operator
Despite these issues, the GB Operator holds promise. The ability to instantly know what a game is and its worth just by plugging it in is a novel concept. It could potentially eliminate the need for online searches to verify cartridge information. Furthermore, it could be a valuable tool for games whose titles are unreadable, whether due to a foreign language or a missing label. The app could be further enhanced by adding links to reviews, gameplay videos, or soundtracks, providing users with a comprehensive overview of the games they are considering.
Tips for Identifying a Legitimate Nintendo Game Boy Cartridge
While the GB Operator is a step in the right direction, the most reliable method to identify a legitimate Nintendo Game Boy cartridge remains the old-fashioned way. A screwdriver (GameBit 3.8mm for GB/GBC, tri-wing Y0 for GBA), a sharp eye, and a search for the alphanumeric code on the ROM chip are the most trusted tools for verification. In addition, a two-digit number printed on the cartridge label can also serve as a clue. Visual examples of both methods can be found in the gallery.
Looking Forward: The SN Operator
Epilogue isn’t stopping at the GB Operator. The company is set to release the SN Operator next month, a device designed for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. The SN Operator will also be compatible with the Retrace app, bringing the same verification and valuation features to a wider range of gaming cartridges.
