Lakewatch: Databricks’ New Security Product
On Tuesday, Databricks announced the launch of a new security product known as Lakewatch. This innovative product leverages Databricks’ vast data storage capabilities, performing typical Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tasks like threat detection and investigation. What sets Lakewatch apart is its usage of AI agents powered by Claude from Anthropic, which allows it to perform these tasks more efficiently and accurately.
Strategic Acquisitions to Support Lakewatch
To bolster the development and functionality of Lakewatch, Databricks has acquired two startups – Antimatter and SiftD.ai. Both acquisitions were completed recently, with the terms of the deals remaining undisclosed. Antimatter, a startup founded by security researcher Andrew Krioukov, had previously raised $12 million led by New Enterprise Associates in 2022. On the other hand, SiftD.ai, despite being relatively new, had already launched a product in November, an interactive notebook tool designed to facilitate collaboration between people and agents.
SiftD.ai and Antimatter: More than Just Acquisitions
Both SiftD.ai and Antimatter are small startups, with SiftD.ai being a few-person team and Antimatter having fewer than 50 employees. Beyond the acquisition, these startups bring crucial intellectual property to the table. For instance, Antimatter was developing a “data control plane” tool aimed at enabling companies to deploy agents securely while protecting sensitive data. SiftD.ai, on the other hand, has its innovative interactive notebook tool.
Databricks’ Ongoing Acquisition Strategy
According to a Databricks spokesperson, the company is continuously on the lookout for promising startups to acquire. The goal of this strategy is to stay ahead of the market trends and meet the evolving needs of its customers. This proactive approach underscores Databricks’ commitment to innovation, ensuring that its services remain relevant and beneficial to its user base.
The acquisitions have already resulted in new team members at Databricks. Andrew Krioukov, founder of Antimatter, now leads the Lakewatch team, signifying a seamless integration of the acquired startups into the company’s workforce.
This news comes ahead of the upcoming Techcrunch event slated to take place in San Francisco, California, from October 13-15, 2026.
