Keep your house safe & sound with OneLink Safe & Sound Smoke Detector!

Share

OneLink Safe & Sound smoke detector has already been keeping houses safe including its line of smoke and CO alarms for more than four decades, but its most recent product. The Onelink Safe & Sound smoke detector is the company’s most creative alarm ever. It’s a smart alarm that connects to your home network via Wi-Fi and sends alerts directly to your phone, just like the Nest Protect, but it also works with Alexa. So it can do everything that an Amazon Echo can, including start giving you sports scores, tell you the newest news and weather, and regulate other smart devices. You receive a strong loudspeaker that really can play music from your Amazon library or wirelessly from your phone. Let us see in detail what it is.

Design:

The Nest Protect was a colossal machine! An all OneLink Safe & Sound smoke detector is a sizable fire and smoke detector at 6.8 x 6.8 x 2.6 inches, but it’s not unsightly. And it’ll probably mix in with the ceiling.

The gadget has rounded sides and is square in design. The top is mostly porous white metal, with a spherical square in the center surrounded by LEDs that glow blue while Alexa is listening. These LEDs may also be used as a nightlight. So you can change their color and brightness using the OneLink app. While there is no acoustic sensor. You may use HomeKit to make a schedule for the light to turn on and off at specific times.

The Safe & Sound alarm system is hardwired. That is, it must be connected to electricity at all times; this is necessary since an always-on smart speaker demands more power than a battery can offer. OneLink is developing a non-Alexa-enabled model that will be powered by batteries alone.

Setup:

The Safe & Sound alarm system is hardwired. That is, it must be connected to electricity at all times; this is necessary since an always-on smart speaker demands more power than a battery can offer. OneLink is developing a non-Alexa-enabled model that will be powered by batteries alone. But no pricing or availability information has been released.

The OneLink Home app connected to the Safe & Sound, and it guided me through the process. One thing to keep in mind is that the alarm can only connect to 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi networks. So make absolutely sure your smartphone is already linked to one. If you have an apple device, it will try to connect to HomeKit as well. So make sure it’s on the same connection as your HomeKit hub.

Alexa Integration: A good start

You may toggle the OneLink’s microphone on and off from the app’s main screen. There’s also a slider that allows you to activate Alexa’s listening function without using the wake word. The volume control was also present; however, you must navigate to the device’s audio area, which is an added step.

You can connect to Alexa, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and SiriusXM all from the Onelink app. The alarm, however, does not have all of Alexa’s features. You can’t use it for whole-home audio since you can’t group it with other Alexa speakers. You can’t use this as an earpiece to call relatives down to supper because it doesn’t operate with Alexa’s Drop-In capability. OneLink, on the other hand, claims that multiroom capability will be accessible by the fourth quarter of 2018 and that the business is working on enabling Drop-In, but no date has been set for that feature’s introduction.

Audio Performance:

The speaker on the OneLink was shockingly loud and impressive for its size. The alarm is designed to use your ceilings as a reflecting surface, which makes the audio resonate more. Music was hardly heard beyond a 5-foot range at around 80% of the Safe & Sound’s maximum level. The Safe & Sound, on the other hand, is readily filled with sounds at maximum volume. Alexa’s voice is stronger than music so when the level was turned all the way up, her voice shook the speaker.

Installation and Performance:

The Onelink Safe & Sounds aren’t hard to set up, but it does involve hardwiring to a fuse box, so if you’re not experienced with house wiring, you should consult an electrician. However, if you’re upgrading an old hardwired alarm, it’s a simple and quick process, especially if it’s a First Alert alarm.

The alarm made a brief chirp when it was turned on, the LED started glowing blue, and a voice told me to download an app and follow the on-screen directions. To add a device, download an app and touch the + button. Choose Safe & Sound from the drop-down menu, then a room and a name. You have the option of watching an installation video or continuing on, in which case the app will look for the alarm. It quickly recognized my alarm and asked me to scan the HomeKit code on the base.
