Google launches Nano Banana 2 model with faster image generation

Google Unveils Nano Banana 2, The Latest in Image Generation

Google has made an exciting announcement regarding the latest version of its popular image generation model – the Nano Banana 2. Officially known as the Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, this new model is set to create more realistic images than its predecessor. Furthermore, the model is now the default in the Gemini app for its Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes.

The first version of Nano Banana was released in August 2025 and quickly gained popularity, particularly in countries like India. The app saw users generating millions of images. In November of the same year, Google introduced the Nano Banana Pro, which offered users the ability to create more detailed and high-quality images.

Nano Banana 2: A Blend of Speed and Quality

The new Nano Banana 2 retains the high-fidelity characteristics of the Pro model, but it produces images at a faster rate. According to Google, users can create images with a resolution ranging from 512px to 4K, in various aspect ratios. The company also highlighted that Nano Banana 2 can maintain character consistency for up to five characters and fidelity of up to 14 objects in one workflow for better storytelling.

One of the major improvements is the ability to issue complex requests with detailed nuances for image generation. The new model also enables users to create media with more vibrant lighting, richer textures, and sharper detail.

Integration Across Various Platforms

With the introduction of Nano Banana 2, it will become the default model for image generation across all apps in the Gemini app. Google also announced its integration into its video editing tool, Flow. Furthermore, Nano Banana 2 will be the default for Google Search results via Google Lens and in AI Mode across 141 countries on the Google app and the web, both on desktop and mobile platforms.

For subscribers of Google’s higher-end plans, Google AI Pro and Ultra, the Nano Banana Pro model will still be available for specialized tasks by regenerating images via the three-dot menu.

Availability for Developers and Verification Measures

For developers, Google has made the Nano Banana 2 available in preview through the Gemini API, Gemini CLI, and the Vertex API. It will also be accessible through AI Studio and Google’s development tool, Antigravity, which was released last November.

Google has emphasized that all images created through the new model will bear a SynthID watermark, Google’s mark to denote AI-generated images. These images will be compatible with C2PA Content Credentials, an industry standard created by companies like Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta. Since the launch of the SynthID verification in the Gemini app in November, it has been used over 20 million times, further demonstrating its popularity and widespread adoption.
