Hands-on with Bee, Amazon’s latest AI wearable

Introducing Bee: Amazon’s Latest AI Wearable

Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping the way we interact with the world. From intelligent virtual assistants to smart home devices, AI is increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives. One of the latest entrants in this arena is Bee, an AI wearable from Amazon. Initial testing with a review unit from Bee revealed a user-friendly device that offers a unique approach to recording and transcribing audio conversations.

Key Features of Bee

Operating Bee is as simple as pressing a button to turn recording on or off. The companion app offers various configuration options, such as marking a section of the conversation with a double tap or using a long-press gesture to leave a voice note or chat with the AI assistant.

Similar to other AI products like Plaud, Granola, Fathom, Fireflies, and Otter, Bee is capable of listening to, recording, and transcribing audio conversations. However, what sets Bee apart is its novel approach to presenting transcriptions. Instead of offering a raw transcription or an overview, Bee segments the audio into sections and provides a summary of each part. This feature is particularly useful for breaking down lengthy conversations, such as interviews, into manageable sections like introductions, important product details, industry trends, and more.

Each section is highlighted with a different background color for easy differentiation. Users can navigate to individual sections to view the exact transcription.

Limitations of Bee

Bee has a few limitations. For instance, it was not immediately apparent how to label speakers in the app. Speaker identification is a common feature in professional AI transcribers. Furthermore, Bee does not retain audio files after transcription, making it unsuitable for scenarios where you need to verify the accuracy of the transcription by replaying the audio.

Beyond a Work Tool

Despite these limitations, Amazon envisions Bee as more than just a work tool. By integrating with Google services, Bee can link recorded conversations to tasks. For instance, after a meeting, Bee could suggest connecting with the person you met on LinkedIn or researching their product. You can also use Bee to leave voice notes—a handy feature that saves you from having to jot down notes manually.

Future Enhancements

Amazon plans to roll out more features for Bee in the coming year. A ‘Growth’ section is in the works that will offer personalized insights as Bee learns more about you. The app will also allow you to confirm and complete a “facts” section about yourself, akin to the memory retention feature of AI chatbots.

Privacy Considerations

Unlike some competitors, Bee does not listen by default. Users are encouraged to ask for consent before recording a conversation. A green light on the device indicates when recording is in progress, providing a visual alert to others.

User Experience

While the Bee device is user-friendly, the wearable band was found to be somewhat unstable during testing, with the band falling off a couple of times. However, the mobile app’s design is superior compared to other in-house apps developed by Amazon, like the Alexa Mobile Experience.

Towards a New Social Contract?

As AI listening devices become more prevalent, societal norms around what is considered acceptable may need to evolve. Similar to how it’s often frowned upon to take videos of strangers without their consent, recording audio using an AI device without permission may be considered inappropriate. This could lead to more self-censorship in public, with people becoming wary of what they say due to the possibility of being recorded.

At the end of the day, the success or failure of Bee will give Amazon insights into whether consumers are ready for a world where AI listening devices are the norm. This will be a test of society’s readiness to embrace this technology and the implications it has for our privacy and social interactions.
