MIT and Hasso Plattner Institute Launch Collaborative Hub for AI and Creativity
The MIT School of Architecture and Planning, the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, the Hasso Plattner Institute, and the Hasso Plattner Foundation have jointly announced the launch of the MIT and HPI AI and Creativity Hub (MHACH). The signing ceremony marked the start of a ten-year initiative aimed at strengthening the relationship between computing and design in the wake of advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
A Joint Venture to Promote Interdisciplinary Research
The Hasso Plattner Foundation has generously funded the initiative, enabling MIT and HPI to promote collaborative interdisciplinary research. The initiative will support a range of educational programs, scholarships, faculty engagement, all with a focus on AI and creativity. This venture also aims to extend the scientific study of AI applications across various disciplines, industries, and societal challenges. The collaboration will kick off with a workshop at MIT on March 19-20, where faculty, students, and researchers will come together to set the early priorities.
Emphasizing Human Creativity in the Information Age
MIT President Sally Kornbluth emphasized the importance of human creativity in the information age, stating that through this collaboration, MIT and HPI aim to create a shared space for students and faculty from various disciplines to explore new ideas and experiment with new tools. This collaboration seeks to invent new frontiers at the intersection of human creativity and AI. Rouven Westphal from the Hasso Plattner Foundation echoed these sentiments, stating that the best minds need the right environment to do their most creative work. He highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to long-term support for this collaboration.
Building a Community at the Intersection of Technology, Creativity, and Social Impact
The new MHACH Hub builds on the success of the Hasso Plattner Institute-MIT Designing for Sustainability research program, launched in 2022 between MIT MAD and HPI. This hub represents their commitment to further collaboration at the intersection of technology, creativity, and social impact. Professor Tobias Friedrich, Dean and Managing Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership, stating that it would foster an environment where students and researchers from both sides of the Atlantic can work together, experiment across disciplines, and learn from each other.
Expanding Research and Teaching on AI and Creativity
The initiative aims to foster a dynamic academic community spanning MIT and HPI, anchored by Hasso Plattner-designated professorships and graduate fellowships. The agreement includes the development of courses and educational programs with a shared focus on AI, as well as expanded experiential opportunities through AI-focused workshops, hackathons, and summer exchanges. A steering committee consisting of representatives from the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, and the Hasso Plattner Institute will facilitate the co-governance of MHACH.
This collaboration is made possible by the Hasso Plattner Foundation’s long-term philanthropic commitment to institutions that combine technological innovation with design thinking and education. The Hasso Plattner Foundation has played a central role in founding and supporting institutions like the Hasso Plattner Institute and international design thinking programs that connect disciplines and regions.
