Nubia’s RedMagic 7 Pro is another gaming phone. It has everything a gamer desires, from an RGB fan to crisp accents and typography. More significantly, the RedMagic 7 Pro comes with all the horsepower you could want, acoustic shoulder triggers, and an updated cooling system.
However, the magic 7 Pro is still a game phone, making it a more narrow alternative than flagship handsets with broader appeal. Nubia’s newest, despite its gaming skills, falls short in other areas, with its seriously unimpressive cameras and obnoxious software. The battery life isn’t even close to the previous-generation RedMagic 6S Pro.
The RedMagic 7 Pro comes in two variants. The Obsidian model costs $799/£679/€799 for 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Supernova model costs $899/£759/€899 for 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
The RedMagic 7 Pro is available for purchase straight from Nubia. Nubia did not mention this variation or its cost at writing, but a device with 18GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
Of course, other smartphones provide top-tier gaming experiences as well. The OnePlus 10 Pro has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU, a redesigned cooling unit, and a latency touchscreen and costs $899 for the 8GB/128GB option. The $999 iPhone 13 Pro, on the other hand, offers a longer battery life and higher performance than the RedMagic 7 Pro.
The RedMagic 7 Pro does not disappoint whenever it comes to performance. While strong, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 within the RedMagci 7 Pro hasn’t wowed me this year, mainly to Apple’s A15 Bionic. Last year’s RedMagic 6S Pro didn’t do any better. As you can see, the RedMagic 7 Pro outperformed its predecessor by a significant margin in the graphics department. In the 4K-1080p video transcoding, it matches the OnePlus 10 Pro and even outperforms one of the greatest Android phones.
When it comes to gaming, the RedMagic 7 Pro exceeds my expectations. The high frame rate allowed for silky smooth gaming. Brawl Stars and Vainglory, for example, can be played at 120 frames per second on the phone. The 2D arena-style action in Brawl Stars was very enjoyable.
The RedMagic 7 Pro has a large 6.8-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz maximum refresh rate. The input sampling rate is 960Hz, which is rather fast. You’ll note that the refresh rate is lower than the 165Hz on the RedMagic 6S Pro or even the RedMagic 7 and even lower than the 144Hz on other top gaming phones or flagships like the Motorola Edge Plus (2022). This is due to the RedMagic 7 Pro’s under-display camera, which precludes Nubia from utilizing the same screen as before.
The RedMagic 7 Pro’s front camera gives you a real all-screen experience. Games and movies take up the entire screen, which is fantastic for playing the Mobile games. Playing Activision’s addictive mobile shooting on this device is fun, and the display helps a lot. If there’s one gripe with the RedMagic 7 Pro’s display, it’s the maximum brightness. The brightness of the panel peaked at 589 nits. In comparison, the OnePlus 10 Pro has a brightness of 734 nits, while the RedMagic 6S Pro has a brightness of 696 nits.
Previous RedMagic phones were known for their long battery life, easily placing them among the top phone battery winners. But that altered with the RedMagic 7, continuing with the RedMagic 7 Pro. It failed to achieve the 10-hour battery test, which the typical smartphone can approach. When the RedMagic 7’s refresh rate to 60Hz, it couldn’t even beat the average smartphone.
Look at the RedMagic 6S Pro, which ran at 165Hz for approximately 3.5 hours longer. At the very least, the RedMagic 7 Pro’s 4500 mAh battery charges up quite quickly, taking only 30 minutes to charge fully. Nubia did supply a 65W adapter with its phone for those keeping track at home.
Those concerned about in-game phones will undoubtedly focus on the RedMagic 7 Pro’s performance and display, but additional features are to consider.
You may reasonably reject the RedMagic 7 Pro’s photography skills, but that’s not something you’d think about while comparing gaming phones. The newest RedMagic has a 64-megapixel primary sensor and 8-megapixel ultrawide, and 2-megapixel macro sensors.
Even with the sun directly in the lens, the RedMagic 7 Pro took the greatest ultrawide photo of the three. As a result, the ultrawide image has a low sharpness and considerable blurriness. The image is dark and noisy in night mode, demonstrating how distant the RedMagic 7 Pro is from rival flagships.
The RedMagic 7 Pro comes with Android 12, which is fantastic. It fixed many of the RedMagic 6S Pro and RedMagic 6’s English translation issues and typos, but it’s still packed with harsh “gamer” visual design choices. The top skin, RedMagic OS 5, hasn’t improved since last.
Game Space, a convenient set of applications for evaluating and optimizing gaming performance, is one of the software’s most useful features. There are no hiccups in the animations or transitions. It does, however, perform admirably.
The Red Core 1 CPU is one feature that distinguishes the RedMagic 7 Pro from prior Nubia gaming phones. This coprocessor helps the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 free up processing power by doing more mundane tasks. Audio, RGB lighting, and haptic input are all handled by the Red Core 1. The Red Core 1 is a terrific example of a smartphone manufacturer providing something unique and valuable instead of utilizing off-the-shelf parts, even if the performance advantages are minor.
The RedMagic 7 Pro puts cooling first, with a nine-layer structure that distributes warmth from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. A modest 20,000 RPM fan featuring RGB effects is also included for active cooling.
Gaming phones are still a limited market. Since most big-name flagships can also play a game well, there’s little incentive for the typical individual to choose the RedMagic 7 Pro. That doesn’t make it a terrible phone, and it doesn’t rule out the product category entirely. Go no farther RedMagic 7 Pro if you’re looking for a gaming phone. It has all the power you’ll ever need and some fantastic features. But under the camera is a welcome feature since it allows for more screen real estate for games.
