Most students and educators use AI – but opinions vary about its ethical use

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a pervasive tool in education, with its adoption and the attitudes towards its use growing increasingly positive each year, according to a new report from Quizlet, a leading online learning platform. This report, titled “How America Learns”, provides insights into the perspectives of students, teachers, and parents on AI implementation, digital learning, engagement, and success beyond the classroom.

Increasing AI Adoption in Education

Generative AI solutions are gaining substantial traction in the field of education. The Quizlet survey found that 85% of respondents — including high school and college teachers and students aged 14 to 22 — reported using AI technology, a remarkable increase from 66% in 2024. Interestingly, the survey shows that teachers are now outpacing students in AI adoption.

The three most common uses of AI technology among students include summarizing information (56%), research (46%), and creating study guides or materials (45%). Among teachers, the most common uses are for research (54%), summarizing or synthesizing information (48%), and creating teaching materials such as tests and assignments (45%).

Ethical Challenges in AI Implementation

The proliferation of AI in education also poses challenges related to academic integrity. However, 40% of respondents believe that AI is being used ethically and effectively in the classroom. This belief is higher among parents (46%) and teachers (57%), compared to students (29%), indicating a need for ongoing education and guidelines for the responsible use of AI technology in learning.

“As adoption increases in education, we need clear guidelines to help mitigate risks and realize the full potential of AI. Everyone – students, educators and parents – has a role to play in understanding not only how AI is used, but also when and why it should be used,” said Maureen Lamb, chair of the AI Task Force and chair of the language department at Miss Porter’s School.

Increasing Popularity of Digital Learning

As AI becomes an integral part of education, the survey results also show that digital learning is becoming increasingly popular. The majority of respondents said that digital learning methods should be equal or superior to traditional education methods, particularly among teachers (71%). The most beneficial aspects of digital learning were identified as flexibility (56%), personalized learning (53%), and accessibility (49%).

Inequality in Access to Digital Tools

Despite the importance and benefits of digital learning, the survey results also highlight an equity gap in access to these tools. Less than half (43%) of respondents with diagnosed or self-identified learning differences, neurodivergent characteristics, or accessibility needs agreed that all students in their community have equal access to learning materials, technology, and supports to succeed in college.

Improving Success in Real-World Learning

The report also uncovered a need for more support to drive success beyond the classroom and provide the necessary resources for real-world learning. While 58% of respondents believe that a four-year college degree is very important for professional success, more than a third of students, teachers, and parents surveyed believe schools are not adequately preparing students for success outside of the classroom.

“As we advance the next era of AI-powered learning, our mission is to give every student and lifelong learner the tools and confidence to succeed, regardless of their motivation or goals,” said Kurt Beidler, CEO of Quizlet. “There are tremendous opportunities when it comes to work-related learning, from developing life skills to improving career readiness, that go well beyond the classroom.”

Finally, the top five skills that respondents believe should be prioritized more in schools include critical thinking and problem-solving (66%), financial literacy (64%), mental health management (58%), leadership skills (52%), and creativity and innovation (50%).
