SAP and Fresenius: Pioneering a Sovereign AI for Secure Healthcare Data Processing
Global health care group Fresenius and market-leading enterprise application software company SAP, are joining forces to build a sovereign AI platform specifically designed for healthcare. This groundbreaking project aims to bring secure, efficient data processing to clinical settings—a crucial requirement in a world where data governance rules are stringent, and public cloud solutions often fall short. Moving AI from pilot to production
The partnership’s primary goal is to create an open and integrated ecosystem where hospitals can utilize AI securely. Instead of running isolated experiments, SAP and Fresenius aim to establish a digital backbone for a sovereign and AI-supported healthcare system.
“Together with SAP, we can accelerate the digital transformation of the German and European healthcare systems and enable a sovereign European solution that is so important in today’s global landscape,” says Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius.
The project will leverage SAP Business AI and the SAP Business Data Cloud to create a compliant, sovereign foundation for operating AI models in healthcare. This infrastructure will handle health data responsibly, a critical requirement for scaling automated processes in patient care.
Overcoming Data Fragmentation
A significant challenge in the healthcare sector is data fragmentation. To tackle this, the partnership will employ SAP’s “AnyEMR” strategy, which supports the integration of diverse hospital information systems (HIS). Open industry standards like HL7 FHIR will facilitate the connection of HIS, electronic medical records (EMRs), and other medical applications.
This connectivity will pave the way for Fresenius to develop AI-supported solutions that increase efficiency across the care chain. The goal is to build an individual, scalable platform that enables connected, data-driven healthcare processes.
Investing in Sovereign AI to Advance Healthcare
SAP and Fresenius have committed to investing a “mid three-digit million euro amount” in the medium term to drive the digital transformation of German and European healthcare systems using AI-supported solutions. These funds will support joint investments in startups and scaleups, alongside internal technological developments, to build a broader library of tools that plug into the sovereign platform.
“With SAP’s leading technology and Fresenius’ deep healthcare expertise, we aim to create a sovereign, interoperable healthcare platform for Fresenius worldwide,” said Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE.
This partnership signifies that the next phase of healthcare AI in Europe will focus on sovereign infrastructure. A controlled environment is vital in industries like healthcare to meet regulatory demands. Without a sovereign data backbone, AI initiatives could risk stalling due to compliance concerns.
