Snapchat Announces The Snappys: Its First-Ever Creator Awards Show
On Wednesday, social media giant Snapchat announced that it will host its inaugural awards show on March 21. Named “The Snappys,” this event is intended to honor and celebrate those creators who are actively shaping culture on Snapchat.
Awards Across Various Categories
The Snappys will award creators in a variety of categories. Some of these include “Spotlight MVP,” “Best Storyteller,” and “Breakout Creator of the Year.” There will also be awards given in the fields of fashion, beauty, sports, music, food, and games. Additional categories that creators can be recognized in include collaboration, comedy, and cultural impact.

Snapchat joins other social media platforms in hosting awards for their creators. Meta-owned Instagram launched a new “Ring” award in October, recognizing creators worldwide. Similarly, TikTok held its first-ever TikTok Awards show in the U.S. in November, giving out awards in categories such as “Creator of the Year,” “Video of the Year,” and “Muse of the Year,” among others. Snapchat’s awards align more with TikTok’s model, as it will also host a traditional awards show where the winners will be announced live at the event.

According to the company, the awards show will unite “creators, industry leaders, and special guests.” Among these special guests is DJ Khaled, who will be bestowed with Snapchat’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” The move to host an awards show underscores how Snapchat and similar platforms are establishing themselves as significant entities within the entertainment industry.
