The Surging Use of AI in K-12 Communications: A Guide for Responsible Practice
In a rapidly advancing technological landscape, K-12 communicators are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance their work. A recent joint report from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) and engagement platform ThoughtExchange offers guidance for the responsible and ethical use of AI in public schools.
The Impact of AI in School Communications
The report, titled “Future-Proof K-12 Communications: School PR Strategies in the Age of AI”, is a compilation of insights from 200 school communications experts across 37 states. The findings highlight how AI is transforming everyday work in school communications and stress the necessity for careful policies, adequate employee training, and transparent practices.
“School communicators have always been adaptable and forward-thinking, and it is no surprise that many have been at the forefront of research into how AI can support their work,” notes Barbara M. Hunter, APR, executive director of NSPRA. However, she emphasizes that while AI offers exciting potential, it cannot replace the strategy, relationships, and human voice at the heart of effective school PR. As technology advances, the ethical and transparent use of AI, with a clear understanding of the continued role of human judgment, is crucial.
Key Findings on AI Usage in Schools
According to the report:
- About 91 percent of the surveyed participants already incorporate AI tools in their communication work
- Around 69 percent report that their districts lack a formal policy on employee use of AI
- Approximately 61 percent admit they do not disclose their use of AI in official communications
The report suggests that communicators use AI to streamline processes, enhance accessibility, and respond quickly in time-sensitive situations. While many report heightened efficiency and clarity, concerns about privacy, misinformation, and over-reliance on automation persist.
AI: An Indispensable Ally in School Communications?
George Psiharis, CEO of ThoughtExchange, believes that AI will become an indispensable ally for communications professionals in school districts, increasing their reach, insight, and responsiveness. But he also stresses that the authenticity of human relationships remains central to trust and understanding.
Recommendations for Responsible AI Use in Schools
The report proposes four key recommendations to support responsible AI use in school systems:
- Enhance AI education and awareness
- Fast-track policy timelines to keep pace with the speed of technology
- Expand the AI policy scope to include staff, not just students
- Shift from urgent reaction to proactive policymaking
These recommendations come with practical tips to help districts bridge the gap between emerging technologies and their practical application in supporting students, staff, and families. The guidelines reiterate that AI is most effective when coupled with human oversight and trust-based communication.
As AI becomes more integrated into daily practices in schools, it is crucial to strike a balance between innovation and intention. The report is a crucial step towards outlining a roadmap for the responsible use of AI in school communications, ensuring that technology serves the best interests of the school communities.
