Uber Partners with Pony AI and Verne for Europe’s First Commercial Robotaxi Service
Ride-hailing giant Uber is uniting forces with autonomous vehicle companies, Pony AI from China and Verne from Croatia, to initiate what is anticipated to be the first commercially available robotaxi service in Europe. The venture is currently undergoing testing in Zagreb, Croatia, where Verne is based, and will soon be incorporated into Uber’s ride-sharing network.
Uber’s Strategic Move Amid the Rise of Robo-taxis
This development marks Uber’s strategic response to the potential financial risks associated with the growing influence of robotaxis in the traditional ride-sharing sector. Over the past year, Uber has collaborated with multiple autonomous vehicle developers to convince investors of its resilience and adaptability in the forthcoming era of robo-taxis.
Collaborative Roles in the Partnership
In this partnership, each company brings its own unique expertise to the table. Uber will be responsible for providing the ride-sharing platform and customers. On the other hand, fleet management will be handled by Verne. Meanwhile, Pony AI will be at the forefront of developing the autonomous driving technology. The initial service will be rolled out in Zagreb, with plans to expand to other European markets. The ambitious goal is to scale up the fleet to thousands of robo-taxis in the coming years.
Pony AI’s Contribution to the Project
The companies are currently validating the technology in Zagreb using Pony AI’s Arcfox Alpha T5 robotaxi, which is equipped with the Chinese firm’s 7th generation technology stack. This vehicle was co-developed and manufactured with the Beijing Automotive Group Co (BAIC), a state-owned entity. As soon as the companies begin charging fares, they anticipate it to be the first commercial robotaxi service in Europe.
The Involvement of Verne
Verne, a side project of supercar manufacturer Rimac, has been relatively quiet in terms of updates since its initial announcement. Late last year, Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of Rimac Group, unveiled a fleet of 60 autonomous vehicle prototypes. Whether these vehicles will eventually be integrated into Uber’s fleet remains uncertain at this point.
This initiative signifies a major step forward in the evolution of autonomous vehicles and the ride-hailing industry in Europe.
