As per insiders, the blocking order was issued on February 24 under Section 69A of India’s Information Technology Act. This provision empowers the government to restrict public access to online content. However, the specific reason behind this sudden move has not been stated publicly by the Indian government. It remains unclear if the action was triggered by a cybersecurity issue, a copyright complaint, or another matter.
Unpredictable Access to Supabase in India
Access to Supabase has been spotty in India over the past few days. The San Francisco-based company acknowledged the issue in social media posts starting Wednesday. The restrictions were initially reported by Supabase on the Reliance Industries’ JioFiber network. However, similar issues have since been reported on several other internet service providers and telecom networks.

Though Supabase announced on social media that they’ve reached out to Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for intervention, the post was later removed. In an update, the company mentioned that the site remained blocked for many users in the country.
Impact on Indian Developers and Startups
An anonymous Indian founder revealed to TechCrunch that new user registrations from India had ceased in the past few days. A technology consultant, also speaking anonymously, stated that they were unable to access Supabase reliably for development and production purposes. While Supabase suggested workarounds like changing DNS settings or using a VPN, these options are impractical for most end users.

Supabase’s Global Growth and the Indian Market
Supabase’s main website remains accessible in India, but not its underlying development infrastructure. India accounts for approximately 9% of Supabase’s global traffic, making it the platform’s fourth-largest traffic source. Data from Similarweb shows a 111% YoY increase in global traffic for the platform and a surge of about 179% in Indian traffic.

Raman Jit Singh Chima, director of Asia-Pacific policy at Access Now, raised concerns about India’s recurrent website blocking regime, stating that it has serious implications for developers. In the past, India has faced criticism for its arbitrary website blocking measures, which have included platforms like GitHub, Vimeo, Pastebin, and Weebly.
