The Transformative Power of AI in Education
Over the last year, there has been an unprecedented push to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into classrooms. This trend has sparked a range of reactions among educators, from hopeful optimism to cautious skepticism. Questions such as “Will AI replace educators?” and “Is it safe for children?” have become common topics of discussion in K-12 schools.
While the rapid evolution of AI technology leaves much to be clarified, my experience as a school counselor in Kansas has shown me that AI can indeed be a valuable tool when used under proper supervision. It offers the potential to enhance our roles, helping students explore their futures, stay on track academically, learn new skills, and improve their mental health.
Building Emotional Resilience with AI
Today’s students face significant emotional pressures. With student-to-staff ratios often exceeding the recommended 250-to-1, educators can’t always be available when students need them. To address this, I developed a chatbot named Pickles, inspired by my lively dog, to provide emotional support to students. This bot helps students manage minor issues, like feeling left out or dealing with conflicts with friends, while allowing me to focus on more urgent cases.
The chatbot has also revealed issues I might have missed otherwise. For instance, a fourth grader confided in the chatbot about her parents’ divorce, prompting me to follow up with her. Similarly, a shy fifth grader learned to initiate conversations with peers using chatbot-driven social scripts, returning to school after spring break more confident and outgoing.
Personalized Career Exploration and Academic Support
One of my key responsibilities is to guide students in thinking about their futures. Traditionally, students might express vague career goals like becoming a lawyer or doctor, and I would direct them to relevant resources. However, I wanted them to delve deeper into their interests.
To facilitate this, I incorporated an AI chatbot into our career exploration process. Instead of jumping to job titles, students discussed their interests and motivations with the chatbot. This approach has led to inspiring outcomes. For example, a student with a passion for travel was introduced to cultural journalism as a potential career path, sparking her interest in writing diaries and blogs.
AI also helps students make informed academic decisions, especially in virtual school environments where requirements vary. In collaboration with a virtual school, we developed an AI tool to guide students in selecting courses needed for graduation, linking them to district-specific resources and state education departments.
Advice for Educators: Embrace AI
We encourage our students to embrace failure as part of learning; educators should adopt the same mindset when exploring AI. It’s important to start small, use trusted platforms, and maintain the human connections at the heart of education. When applied thoughtfully, AI can extend educators’ reach, personalize their impact, and unlock students’ potential.
