The “EV Play LT” is a $199 adapter specifically designed for GM electric vehicles that operate on the Android Automotive platform but lack native support for connecting your phone to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. This device presents a significant solution for tech-savvy drivers who miss these functionalities.
How It Works
The adapter leverages an app installed on the vehicle’s Android Automotive system. It projects Android Auto or CarPlay through the adapter, allowing either wired or wireless connections. Demonstrations shared by the company suggest the solution is effective and user-friendly.
EV Play LT is confirmed to work in GM vehicles, including the 2024, 2025, and 2026 model years of the Chevy Equinox, Blazer, and Silverado EVs, the GMC Sierra and Hummer, and the Cadillac IQ/IQL, Optiq, and Vistiq. Theoretically, it could work on newer vehicles too, including potentially the 2027 Bolt, though users should proceed at their own risk.
Beyond Basic Features
There’s also a more expensive version of this concept that adds functionalities beyond phone projection, such as HDMI support for game consoles and more. Notably, a version for Rivian vehicles is available as well.
Potential Challenges
Despite its promise, the EV Play LT faces potential challenges. While it is not easy for GM to disable this workaround, it remains a possibility. According to EV Play, disabling the adapter would not be immediate or automatic, but customers should be aware of the eventual risk.
Ultimately, whether GM chooses to disable such devices remains uncertain. While GM controls their systems, many argue that retaining these functionalities could foster customer loyalty, especially given the competitive EV market where alternatives with CarPlay and Android Auto are available.
Although this adapter offers a temporary solution for GM EV owners wishing to use Android Auto or CarPlay, it may not be a wise factor to base a new car purchase on. Some users have reportedly used the adapter for as long as six months without issues, but the risk of discontinuation remains, as seen with previous attempts to reintroduce these functionalities.
